Read MoreFans are also wondering if there will be a second season of this hit thriller, billed as a limited series. Here is what we know so far about the possibility of a "True Story" season 2.
There are spoilers for "True Story. The twisted crimes of "True Story" are largely resolved by the end of the finale, thanks to a few dead bodies. The brothers learn that Daphne's "death" was a money-grubbing conspiracy by Carlton, and are cornered by goons Savas and Nikos at a Philadelphia 76ers game. Carlton confesses to the conspiracy and even tries to get the mobsters to help the Kid, but neither brother is likely to be saved.
Unbeknownst to anyone, the Kid has a gun and kills Savas and Nicos. While Carlton is making plans to save himself and the Kid from a predicament, the Kid turns the gun on his own brother. He kills Carlton and sets up the scene as if the Mafia had killed Carlton. Kidd is acquitted and the police believe he killed Savas and Nikos out of self-defense.
The three deaths (and Simone, aka Daphne, being shot by the mob earlier in the episode) leave Kidd as the only one who knows the whole truth. The comedian makes a false confession to his manager Todd and bodyguard Hershel, but Hershel overhears the truth at a Sixers game. He blackmails the Kid, demanding $6 million, and the Kid negotiates a contract payment for a superhero sequel. The series ends with a full-circle moment, in which the Kid gives the same speech as at the beginning of the first episode.
By the end of season one, all plot threads are complete. Everyone directly involved in the murders except for the Kid is dead, and he has set up the blackmail money for Hershel. With even Carlton dead, it seems that Kidd's life will be smooth sailing from now on, except for the guilt of killing his own brother.
True Story is billed as a limited series, with seven episodes telling a complete story. However, being a Netflix hit, there is always the possibility that the thriller will be renewed for a new season. In that case, the Kid's past misdeeds and the death of his brother may come back to haunt him.
Neither Kevin Hart nor the show's creator, Eric Newman, have so far revealed any details about a possible season two. However, Newman has given some insight into what the Kid's character might do after the last scene, in which the comedian is interviewed on Don Lemon's CNN show. Newman told Decider (open in new tab) that the Kid will probably spin his involvement in the murder into a sympathetic media tour while covering up that he killed Carlton.
"[Kidd] was always going to use it as part of his story," Newman said. 'I've seen him exploit tragedy a million times. But in Kidd's case, this is good for him. Not only will he come to terms with his relationship with his brother and know the truth, but he will sell a lot of tickets. He will run up the stairs to victory. He is going to be on Oprah. He will appear on Don Lemon at the end of the show to talk about this defeat. And yes, it's a defeat. Clearly betrayed by his brother, there is a deep narcissism in our ending.
