Read MoreThe third season of "Succession" concluded on December 12 with a stunning episode reminiscent of the season premiere.
Here is everything that happened in the ninth episode of the season, "All the Bells Say," written by show creator Jesse Armstrong.
The Season 3 finale begins with Logan (Brian Cox) reading to his grandson, while the rest of the Roy family participates in a wholesome, but not too wholesome, game of Monopoly in their Tuscan villa (you won't be surprised to learn that Shiv (Sarah Snook) cheats a lot in this game (I suppose it wouldn't). (But watch out for Tom's "Get Out of Jail Free" card as a callback early in the season and a foreshadowing of his betrayal later in the episode.) At the end of episode 8, we learn that Kendall (Jeremy Strong) has been hospitalized after falling off a pool float and nearly drowning. Kendall claims it was an accident, but the rest of the family is concerned, knowing that it was most likely a suicide attempt. Shiv attempts to intercede on his brother's behalf, but it devolves into a brutal screaming match. Logan and Roman (Kieran Culkin) head to Lake Como to visit Matsson (Alexander SkarsgÄrd) to arrange an "equal merger." Mattson quickly gains the upper hand and offers Logan an attractive deal: Gojo buys Waystar, Mattson takes control of the board of directors, and Logan is let go. Mattsson promises Roman a position in the new company. Logan then sends Roman off to Tuscany for his mother's wedding.
The wedding of Caroline (Harriet Walter) and Peter Munion (Pip Torrence) continues. Shiv gives a heartwarming and passive toast at the reception, but before the reception, he begins to realize that there is something wrong with Gojo's dealings. Shiv tracks down Roman and Kendall and intuits that Logan is planning to sell the company. While Roman hides the fact that he knew about Mattsson's offer, Kendall becomes emotional and reveals her involvement in the death of a waiter at Shiv's wedding. 'Shiv, I'm not here. I don't feel very connected to my children or my endeavors right now." In a shockingly tender turn of events, Shiv and Roman gather around their brother to ease his guilt. Kendall's revelation on the dirt road draws the siblings together, and they collectively decide to take down their father (well, Roman needs some help). Thanks to the terms of Logan and Caroline's divorce settlement, the siblings have enough stock to prevent drastic changes. In the car on the way to Logan's hotel, Shiv calls Tom and shares his plan.
When the children finally reach dear old dad, he mocks their efforts and tries to reason with him, explaining in anger that they deserve to be left flapping in the wind and finally have to work to accomplish something as he had to. Shiv, Kendall, and Roman can't understand why he is one step ahead of them. (Roman tries to appeal to Jeri, but Jeri was holed up in Logan's corner after Roman's dick made a big mistake at the picnic. Logan leaves, Tom enters, and the kids are shocked and heartbroken.
The town has a new number one boy. Tom (Matthew McFaddin) takes the biggest power grab of the season (and his life) by telling Logan about the kids' plan to betray Shiv and stop the sale of Waystar Royco. After Shiv tells Tom about their idea to use the holding company's shares to block the bipartisan vote needed for Logan's sale, Tom takes the information straight to the big guy, giving Logan the time he needs to call his ex-wife and renegotiate the divorce agreement that gave the kids the shares in the first place.
Tom's double betrayal is revealed in the final moments of this episode, when Tom joins his friends and Logan thanks them by patting his son-in-law on the shoulder. Shiv sees the moment and realizes that her husband's betrayal (and, presumably, that Tom has been Logan's double agent all season long). It is not clear whether Tom knows that Shiv has realized everything (or whether Kendall and Roman know), but it is clear how Tom came to this duplicitous decision. He quietly distanced himself from Logan throughout the season, even offering to go to jail on behalf of the company. And as the season progressed, Tom stopped viewing his relationship with Shiv through rose-colored glasses, realizing that Shiv had little, if any, interest in Tom's position at Waystar. Tom, however, remains loyal to his true partner, Greg (Nicholas Braun). Tom brings his plan to Greg and convinces him that if he chooses Team Logan, it will end up better than he could have imagined. (Greg was in Italy, but he was into dating the Contessa of Luxembourg.)
Roy, the eldest son, has a petty breakup when he realizes, through Kendall's impromptu meddling, that his brothers don't take him seriously (or never remember that he is actually Logan's oldest son). But all's well that ends well (sort of). This is because the very reluctant Willa finally agrees to Conor's marriage proposal with a rousing "nothing could be worse." If you think that relationship is going to end well, you'd better go away now.
In an interview with GQ, McFadyen revealed that he shot several versions of the final scene. 'There was one where we were away from Sarah and one where we were closer to Sarah. [The shoot] was pretty loose, as is often the case," he said. The take that appeared in the final episode, in which Shiv saw Tom and Logan chatting but not Kendall and Roman, set up an interesting premise for the start of the next season. 'It was brilliant to see Logan walk into that room in mid-air after all the yelling and screaming. It was brilliant to walk into that room. McFadyen also noted that while Tom's decision to betray his wife had been building up throughout the season (remember his reaction to Shiv's "sexy talk"? He told GQ magazine, "Shiv could have said it differently and he would have gone along with it." And in a post-finale interview with EW, Sarah Snook admitted that Shiv had seen Tom and Logan's exchange, but that Shiv had concealed that he was aware of Tom's power moves." Snook said, "In that take, it felt natural," Snook said, "because Tom was physically close to me. I said, 'Get away from me. I can't look you in the face and convincingly hide my scars. So I decided to think that the hurt was from something else." The actress also gave insight into Shiv's inner monologue in the final moments of the season, telling EW that Shiv probably doesn't blame herself for pushing Tom to Logan's side. In that moment, I don't think she would think, 'Oh, this is my fault. I think she's really like, 'I'm in trouble.' I can't believe my husband defiled me. I have nowhere else to turn. My mother abandoned me. My father is the devil and my husband has made a deal with the devil. So I have nowhere to run. Besides, will I really run away to my brothers? I don't think so," Snook said. She also talked about how that emotional, dirt road scene between Kendall, Shiv, and Roman came about, revealing that the iconic shot of Kendall sitting on the ground and Shiv's hand on his head was improvised. She told EW, "It was instinct to put my hand on his head." "She is obviously sympathetic and empathetic to what he is going through and what it is. But it's like, can you believe this right off the bat?" She said, "She feels that she has to take more responsibility for one of them, the business side of it, because her brothers are not capable at that point. But she's not a total ice queen, cold-hearted woman."
