Commentary on the Season 2 Finale of "Euphonium

The good news: it could have been worse, and it could have been boring. The always controversial, sometimes hilarious, sometimes devastating "Hibike! Euphonium's second season ended Sunday night with episode 8, "All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name."

While this episode concluded some storylines and healed some broken hearts, it left just as many unanswered questions: will Rory charge Lou (Zendaya) for the unpaid money? What is happening to Kat (Barbie Ferreira)? Where will Maddie (Alexa Demme) move to? Are the images of Jules (Hunter Schaefer) and Cal (Eric Dane) on the USB that Nate (Jacob Elordi) gave to the cops? Have Lou and Lexie (Maude Apatow) asked Fezko (Angus Cloud) what happened? How is Zia doing?

We'll have to wait for the answers to these questions, as a third season of Sam Levinson's HBO series has already been confirmed, but for now, "Hibike! Euphonium," here's everything that happened in the Season 2 finale.

Ah, the storyline that spawned a thousand memes. Bloodthirsty Cassie stormed the stage right after Nate dumped her and had a complete meltdown. She exclaims that Lexie is just watching life happen to her and not experiencing it like she did. She dragged her crying sister offstage to confront her sister and tackle the theatrical version of herself (to be fair, the theatrical version of Kathy was trying to mime an orgasm on a carousel). Lexie and Cathy's mother, Susie, run up on stage to break up their daughters, a hilarious but ultimately futile turn of events.

Maddie joins the fray, running onto the stage and causing a riot between the actors in the play and those in real life. Kathy flees into the hallways of the school, pursued by Maddie (and Kat by her). We catch up with our former friends in the bathroom, where they are silently tending to their injuries (Maddie, the queen, only has a graze wound on her leg). Cathy says goodbye to Nate, and Maddie, amused but not surprised, tells Cathy, "I'm sorry.

After Nate escapes from the East Highland auditorium, we find him in his car loading a revolver (apparently the same one he used to threaten Maddie) during the dance sequence. He drives to Cal's construction site (his current residence) and, upon entering, sees his father partying with prostitutes. Nate greets his father with an aggressive hug and pours him a drink. He begins to blame his father for abandoning the family, revealing that when he was only 11 years old he found Cal's stash of pornography (aka the sex tape Cal made) and explaining that the pornography had hurt him so much that Nate had recurring nightmares of his father performing sex acts on him

.

Cal asks his drinking buddy to walk away and finally apologizes for inflicting years of trauma on his son. Cal admits that he loved his son and should have protected him, but in the end Cal's words were meaningless. Nate quickly flicks his gun, but pulls out a flash drive. He says he wants revenge on his father and that "everything" - all the footage of Cal's sexual encounters filmed without his consent - is stored on the drive. As reality dawns on Cal's face, he begins to hear the sirens of police cars. Nate's season 2 arc ends with him watching his father being taken into police custody.

Despite Kathy's best efforts to frustrate her theatrical ambitions, Lexie continues the show after a tearful interlude, encouragement from the stage manager, and a "Lexie" chant prompted by Lou. (She received a standing ovation for "Our Life" and a call from Lou a few days later. The play helped Lou and Lexie reconcile, and they got together and Lou said he was amazed that Lexie used the play to cope with and unwind from the hardships she had endured, including her troubled relationship with her father. Lou revealed to Lexie that the play, which even recreated the eulogy Lou gave at his father's funeral, helped him understand that he, too, had to find a way to process his grief. Says Lew to Lexie, "I don't want this to drag on forever."

A flashback shows that Liu went to see Elliot a few days before the play and told him that she forgave him for "snitching" on her and that he ultimately saved her life. She asks Elliott if he is still using drugs, and he says yes, and also reveals that he and Jules have not talked much since Rue's intervention. Elliot plays a song on his guitar for Lou and asks if they can be friends again. Lou says that it was Elliott who said they were bad for each other, and Elliott agrees.

After the play, Jules approaches Lou and tells him she loves him and misses him. Lou silently kisses Jules on the forehead and leaves. In the narration, Lou explains that Jules was her first love and that she wants to remember that in a positive way, and recommends that they not get back together. The narration continues, revealing that Lou was sober until the end of the school year.

Prepare yourselves, readers. Faye (Chloe Cherry) becomes the episode's hidden hero by warning Fezco about Custer's betrayal and cleverly using a dropped water glass as a distraction. She tries to blame Mouse's murder on Laurie, a fearsome drug dealer who appeared earlier in the season. Until Ashtray (Javon Walton) decides to stab Custer in the neck with his own hands. Fezco springs into action, choking Custer and destroying his cell phone and all recorded evidence. Unfortunately, Fezko knew that the police would be on the scene any minute, so he punched Ashtray, making it look as if Ashtray had been a bystander to the violence. He then put his own fingerprints on the murder weapon.

Fezko tells Ashtray that he takes full responsibility for Custer's (and possibly Mouse's) death, but Ashtray will have none of it. He locks himself in the bathroom with several loaded guns; S.W.A.T. breaks down the door, arrests Faye, and begins a gunfight with Ashtray as a heartbroken Fezco looks on. Fezco continues to plead with Ashtray to surrender, even though he is shot in the stomach in the firefight. Eventually, the police break down the bathroom door and find Ashtray pretending to be injured. As the officers approach him, Ashtray shoots him dead. [The camera cuts to Fezko staring at his brother being killed, and S.W.A.T.'s gun is pointed at Ashtray. Fezco and Faye are taken away in handcuffs, and Fezco's love letter to Lexie is left in the wreckage of the house, covered in blood.
