Dropout" Casting Guide

Hulu's long-awaited show about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes has finally arrived. Based on Rebecca Jarvis' podcast of the same name (opens in new tab), The Dropout follows the entrepreneur from her teenage years to her time as head of Theranos, a biomedical company that claimed to be able to perform several different tests with just a few drops of blood. Eventually, the company's fraudulent practices came to light, and Holmes was convicted earlier this year of defrauding investors (open in new tab).

Following the spring of the TV scam, the show delves deeply into Holmes and those around her who either supported her vision, realized she was a fraud, or were stuck in the middle. To tell this story, "Dropout" has assembled a stellar cast of TV talent, including actors from "Succession" and "Sesame Street." Here is a look at the cast of "Dropout."

Elizabeth Holmes dropped out of Stanford University to start a biomedical company. Little does the Steve Jobs-loving business owner know that she will have to deceive investors in order to achieve her goals. Seyfried has appeared in "Mean Girls," "Veronica Mars," "Mamma Mia! , "Jennifer's Body," and "Big Love," before breaking out in films and shows, starting her career on soap operas in the early 00s. Most recently, he received his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Old Hollywood star Marion Davies in "Mank."

Holmes met Sunny Balwani, founder of a successful high-tech company, on a language study trip to China. The two then keep in touch and begin dating, and eventually Holmes brings him into Theranos, but their relationship is kept secret. Andrews is best known for playing Sayid on all six seasons of "Lost," for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award. The British native has also appeared in Sense8, Instinct, and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.

Holmes' mother, Noelle, has been there for her daughter throughout the founding and rise of Theranos, thanks in part to the Holmes family's connections (Noelle worked as a congressional aide before giving birth to Elizabeth). Over the years, Marvel has appeared in several drama series, including "Person of Interest," "Fargo," "Manifest. You may remember her as President Elizabeth Keane in "House of Cards" and "Homeland.

When "Dropout" began, Holmes' father Chris had just lost his job at Enron as the scandal unfolded. In the years following his loss, Chris was an ardent supporter of his daughter, even telling her in one scene to get a job rather than stay by his hospital bed. Gil played another politician in House of Cards: Garrett Walker. He has also appeared in the hit films Mr. Robot, Ray Donovan, The Get Down, and most recently in HBO's The Gilded Age.

As a freshman at Stanford University, Holmes convinced Professor Robertson to let him join his graduate-level lab. Tony Award-winning Irwin played the character Mr. Noodle on Sesame Street in Elmo's world for decades in the 90s and 00s. More recently, he has appeared in CSI: Forensics, Legion, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Gilded Age.

Rakesh met Holmes as a TA in the freshman class. He later became an early employee of Theranos and helped design the first blood test prototype. Ambudkar is best known for his role as Mindy Lahiri's brother in The Mindy Project and as Devi's teacher in Never Have I Ever. He is also a longtime collaborator with Lin-Manuel Miranda, with whom he performed in a theater company called Freestyle Love Supreme, and played Aaron Burr in an early version of Hamilton.

Engineer Edmond Khoo, another early employee of Theranos, was one of the first to feel conflicted about the direction of the company. A Brooklyn native, Liao had previously appeared in Cowboy Bebop, Manifesto, The Unforgettable, Prison Break, and 24.

Gibbons, who works as a biochemist at Theranos, is a self-confessed father figure and advisor to Holmes, but is slowly falling out of the founder's inner circle. Frye was in the limelight as a popular British comic in the 1980s and 1990s, working with Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson. Over the years, he has appeared in Bones, The Great Indoors, and 24: Live Another Day.

Dr. Phyllis Gardener, a professor at Stanford University, met Holmes before the birth of Theranos and became skeptical of the founder. Metcalf is best known to moviegoers for her role as the mother in Lady Bird. She has also been a mainstay of network television for decades, appearing in Roseanne, The Big Bang Theory, and The Conners.

Holmes' childhood neighbor, Dr. Huyds, is an inventor, entrepreneur, and physician who runs a biomedical research company. When he applies for a patent that Theranos needs to install a machine in a patient's home, Holmes sues him rather than work with him. Macy is best known for his role as Frank Gallagher on Showtime's long-running series Shameless. He also appeared in the films Room, Seabiscuit, and Jurassic Park III.

Schultz, a director of Theranos, is a former Secretary of State and former Secretary of the Treasury who was an ardent supporter of Holmes, causing discord within the family. Waterston is best known for his role as Jack McCoy on "Law & Order" for over 300 episodes, a role he reprises in this revival. He has also appeared in "Grace & Frankie", "The Newsroom", and the films "Miss Sloane" and "On the Basis of Sex".

Rosin is also an entrepreneur, believing in Theranos' vision and working closely with Holmes to develop a partnership with Walgreens. Lack is best known for his role as Cameron in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and for playing aspiring politician Connor Roy in the HBO hit.
