Ultimatum" Season 2: Everything We Know

As expected, The Ultimatum hit Netflix like a bag of bricks filled with heartbreak and engagement rings. This latest show from the producers of "Love is Blind" (open in new tab) follows six couples in their young 20s who are faced with an ultimatum between those who demand marriage and those who have yet to consider it. In the first eight episodes released, these couples break up, pair up within a group of 12, live together for three weeks in a new pair, and return to their original partners for another three weeks. Next week's finale will see if any of these couples have resolved their issues enough to say "I do" (or at least "I will").

The show only launched on April 6, but Netflix's faith in the team that discovered reality stars like Lauren & Cameron and Diptyque is strong, and "Ultimatum" is number one on the charts, having debuted at #1, followed by "The Last of Us," which debuted at #2, and "The Last of Us," which debuted at #3. What is known about the show's future is as follows.

Netflix announced that "Ultimatum" would get a season 2 more than a week before season 1 premiered.

Executive producer Chris Coren also spoke to Variety (opens in new tab) about the show's premise and what draws viewers in.

"It's based on conversations and situations that are very real and relatable to many people. 'What's fascinating is when you actually look at the reasons why people aren't ready, there are a lot of reasons. 'I don't want to repeat the past,' or 'I'm not ready, I'm too young,' or 'I need to be financially stable.' Some of those reasons may be valid, but the real reason is that they are not sure they want to marry that person. Most of what they say are our excuses, and they are very common."

We could find no hint that filming for Season 2 has already begun, but Netflix has been releasing reality shows fairly quickly of late. Even "Love is Blind" is set to return super-fast, having filmed seasons 2 and 3 at the same time. Judging by the casting situation, new episodes could be released by 2023.

According to the announcement, Season 2 will take a new direction, with an all queer, mostly female cast. It is too early to know who will appear or where the season will be placed, but season one featured six Austin, Texas-based couples (open in new tab). Eagle-eyed fans have discovered that the show's official Instagram (opens in new tab) follows the cast ahead of the broadcast, so the new cast may be revealed in a similar fashion. Two who will undoubtedly be returning: our intrepid hosts, Nick and Vanessa Lachey.

As for filming locations, both "Love is Blind" and "Ultimatum" have taken the all-local cast approach, letting us film scenes of the couple's daily lives as well as their friends and family. (Previously, Atlanta, Chicago, and Austin might be out of the running.)

The film's location was not a surprise, as it was the first time that a local film had been filmed in the United States.
