Read MoreI pumped breast milk for the first few months after my daughter was born. It was a very long and stressful road: my milk supply was low and my daughter did not want to breastfeed, but I was determined to give her as much milk as I could make. In the early days of breastfeeding, it can take up to 10 pumpings a day to establish a supply of breast milk, which can take up a lot of time and energy when your baby needs it the most.
That's why the wearable, smart Willow breast pump was a lifesaver for me. If I had to describe this brand in one word, it would be freedom. There are plenty of pumps out there that are big, bulky, loud, and have to be plugged into the wall. This is different. For a nursing parent, the ability to do chores, take care of the baby, and even lie down while pumping is something I never thought I would need, and when you have it, it makes life so, so much easier. If you choose to pump, Willow can help you.
The brand has two different models: the Willow 3.0 and the Willow Go. Both are wearable, cordless, hand-free pumps that offer hospital-grade suction power in a sleek design that fits on your bra. Quiet and discreet, they are easy to milk on the go and easy to clean with dishwasher-safe components. Both pumps are FDA approved and FSA/HSA compliant. Willow users have also stated that they pumped more milk when using Willow 3.0 compared to the previous generation pump¹
Willow 3.0 has all the bells and whistles. Willow 3.0 is the only wearable breastmilk pump that offers 360° spill-free mobility: you can literally use it while standing on your head when pumping breast milk into a plastic bag. The Willow 3.0 pump kit comes with a spill-proof disposable milk bag for storage. You can also purchase Willow's compatible reusable milk container set (sold separately for $49.99) for easy milk transfers. In addition, smart pump technology allows users to track output, select suction levels, and view session history, all from their smartphone using the Willow 3.0 app. For all these benefits, the price is higher at $499.99. One should also consider purchasing an additional spill-proof milk bag ($23.99).
Willow recently introduced the Willow Go, a wearable pump. The Willow Go can also pump discreetly, but it is not completely leak-proof like the Willow 3.0. However, it is not completely leak-proof like Willow 3.0. Still, it's perfect for multitasking and moving around while pumping hands-free and cord-free. Unlike premium pumps, Willow Go is only compatible with the included reusable milk container. WillowGo is also the only bra-mounted milk pump that provides up to 14 ounces per pumping session. For those who produce more milk, the Willow Go 7 oz. reusable milk container set is sold separately for $29.99.
I found that with these two pumps in my nursing bra, I could comfortably handle work and household chores, one less thing to worry about. My list of things to do was piling up for the first few weeks, so I got it off my chest.
If I were pumping breast milk now (or if I were to have a second child in the future and pump breast milk), I would probably choose the Willow Go. I like the ease of the container and I've never made enough breast milk to save it ahead of time. But the Willow 3.0 I used for my first child was top-notch, and I was genuinely happy with the additional features of the app: which breast milk production is higher? Which session produced the most milk. Finding these answers made me feel like an expert on my body, with all the right tools and data to optimize my breastfeeding journey.
If you're wondering which pump is right for you, this handy comparison chart is a great way to compare features and envision what works best for your lifestyle. Or check out Willow's Resource Center and get in touch.
¹In tests, experienced Willow users who milked more than 20 times in Generation 3 milked an average of 20% more milk than the previous generation.
