Stranger Things" Season 4, Volume 2: Everything We Know

It's been two weeks since the first volume of "Stranger Things" Season 4 was released, and we've just about recovered from the big reveal of Vecna (opens in new tab), which marked the end of all seven episodes. Unfortunately, we still have a few more weeks until the true finale of Season 4. In the meantime, we will obsess over the fate of our favorites (opens in new tab) (including some new (opens in new tab) faces (opens in new tab)) and, given time, rewatch the series from the beginning for Vecna's Easter egg.

Its true finale, the second volume of Season 4, arrives in July with two feature-length episodes that promise the most epic scenes we've seen in Stranger Things so far. As the release date approaches, the Duffer brothers and other cast and crew have given some hints as to what's to come. Here is what we know so far.

Briefly, two factions of the Hawkins gang have discovered Vecna's true identity, while the other two are trying to return home to help Eleven. Joyce and Murray occupy a Russian prison and have a tearful reunion with Hopper. Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle, with the help of Susie, locate Eleven and head to Nevada to save her. Nancy, Steve, Robin, and Eddie, with the help of Dustin, Max, Lucas, and Erica, find the gate out of the Upside Down, but while going through, Nancy falls under Vecna's spell out of guilt over Barb's death.

Meanwhile, Eleven, who has been replaying her memories to relearn how to use her powers, discovers that the kindly clerk she befriended is actually Henry Creel, a.k.a. Number One, the origin of Dr. Brenner's experiments and his first subject. The two confront each other, and Eleven sends One to the Upside Down, where he becomes Vecna. This was the last time we saw Elle, who was still experimenting at the time. (To add to the timeline for those wondering, according to Duffers, these events occurred two years before the events of season one.)

Netflix will release the second part of season 4 on July 1 at midnight. While any wait is long after that big reveal of the ending, the second volume will be released fairly quickly in relation to other shows that have two-part seasons on streamers, since in the final season of Ozark, fans had to wait three months between the first and second parts. so it is great that "Stranger Things" will only take a month.

Volume 2 will feature two new episodes to wrap up the season 4 storyline. Following the feature-length episode 7 (1 hour and 39 minutes), the eighth episode, titled "Dad," runs about 1 hour and 25 minutes. The finale, titled "The Piggyback," will be a whopping 2 hours and 19 minutes, a similar movie-sized scale to episode 7. In an interview with TheWrap (opens in new tab), Matt Duffer said, "Episodes 7 and 9 especially are movies. And 9 is a long movie."

With less than two weeks until the second volume is available, Netflix has released the full trailer, which hints at the season's final boss battle between Vecna and the Upside Down. The trailer shows the Hawkins children (including Erica and Nancy, who is shaken by a vision of Vecna) in an RV, heading toward "something." In an ominous voiceover, Brenner says Hawkins will fall. Other clips include Max wearing his trusty Walkman (which makes sense since the trailer soundtrack is all "Running Up That Hill"), Eddie picking up his guitar in the Upside Down as Steve comes through the gate There's the part where the Hoppers are looking at what the Russians have in the weird Upside Down museum (which actually looks like a piece of Mind Flayer) and Will is hugging Jonathan and the brothers are sobbing. We also see Brenner telling Eleven that he is not ready, and Robin saying, "Maybe it won't work this time." (I'm ready to sob. )

The two-minute clip ends with the Hawkins gang in a big fight, the Hoppers fighting off the demogorgons in prison, Lucas punching the bully Jason for some reason (still, yay!), and Eleven standing before a huge explosion in the Nevada desert. Finally, Vecna says, " Your friends have lost."

Viewers who remained after the ending shot of Episode 7 were rewarded with a surprise teaser for Volume 2 (see below), a 30-second preview that begins just after Eleven sends One/Vecna into the Upside Down. 'It's over, Eleven. You have freed me," the monster says in voiceover, but his present voice suggests that he is saying this to Eleven outside the experiment.

We also see Dr. Brenner looking at the cracks left from the closed portal (perhaps spending some time with this sadistic scientist in "Papa"), Steve, Nancy, and Robin looking at one of Vecna's clocks in the Upside Down (Robin is in a villain's trance to suggesting that he has returned to free Nancy), and we also get flashes of future scenes, including Dustin and Eddie in their makeshift armor.

As for Hopper, he, Joyce, and Murray appear to be stuck in Russian for a bit longer, as they stand in front of a dusty museum exhibit with an upside-down monster inside. They also find a large tank filled with what looks like the same sandy souls that appeared when Mind Flayer's consciousness left Will's in Season 2.

Netflix has also released photos of Volume 2:

Members of the show's creative team are excited to promote Volume 2, promising that the show will grow in scale with each episode released promises to do so. Executive producer Shawn Levy told Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab), "As great as Volume 1 is, Volume 2 is extraordinary."

Vecna actor Jamie Campbell Bower (open in new tab) also gave some hints for Stranger Things season 5 in an interview, saying that we will get more answers about Vecna's back story and his motivations.

Bower told EW, "If you thought it couldn't get any bigger, you're wrong. It goes further, visually, narratively, and emotionally for all the characters. It is a truly explosive climax. I know a lot of people use the word explosive, scope and scale, but that's what I mean. We learn a lot as viewers in these last two episodes."

The actor also told The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab), "I think what you're going to see is the human side of Vecna. Let me just say that. And there's something huge, great, and cool about it. Especially Vecna and Henry's evolution towards Vecna."

However, not everything will be answered; when asked in an interview with Variety (opens in new tab) about some details, particularly whether the Upside Down was frozen in time on the day Will was taken in the series premiere, the Duffer brothers said that the second volume will provide some answers, but not all. "Actually," Matt Duffer said, "it's one of the few questions we've raised this season that won't be answered in Volume 2. "But it does set the stage for some big reveals in the final season."

Fans should also be prepared for bad fates awaiting some of the characters. Ross Duffer told Variety, "I don't want to say too much, but I'm certainly worried about the characters going into the second volume. It's a dark season, and the kids aren't kids anymore. Everyone is in danger. I have an ominous feeling that things might go wrong. Whether they will or not, you'll have to wait and see."
