The ending of "Keep Breathing" explained.

Netflix's new miniseries "Keep Breathing" follows the thrilling journey of a woman trying to survive alone in the wilderness. Liv, a New York attorney (played by Melissa Barrera of "In the Heights" (open in new tab)), takes an unknown private jet to see her estranged mother in northwestern Canada. When the plane crashes, Liv is left alone, and with no one knowing where she is, the young woman struggles to return to civilized society.

The six-episode series is full of surprises, such as Liv's traveling companion actually being a drug courier and a lawyer having a tense confrontation with a bear. It also reveals that Liv is pregnant and searching for the mother who abandoned her when she was a child, to see if she can really be a good mother. In the final episode, through memories and hallucinations, Liv finds a way to heal her trauma and maybe even escape the intense ordeal.

The finale begins with Liv surviving a fall from a cliff edge, thanks in part to hitting a tree branch on the way down. Upon landing, Liv is bruised and in a state of shock, during which she hallucinates having a conversation with her doctor about how to relieve stress during pregnancy. Eventually she regains her sense of direction and continues walking north, lost in memories of her late father, who encouraged her to "get up" every morning.

Throughout the day, her memory leans toward her parents, recalling her childhood drawings (a talent she shared with her mother) and caring for her sick father as an adult. While walking, she witnesses the Northern Lights and gets a bucket list. She then hallucinates to Danny and tells him that she should have told him she was pregnant. She also says she believes she would have made a good mother.

During a torrential downpour, Liv recalls a conversation between herself and her dying father and asks why he did not give her a postcard from her mother. Liv asks why her father did not give her a postcard from her mother. Her father says that the postcards were not for him, but Liv says that he has no right to decide whether or not she sees them. Eventually she kisses his forehead as a sign of forgiveness, and after reassuring him that he will always be by her side, he dies.

After the memory ends, Liv hears a murmuring stream and thinks she is by the road, but it is actually an aggressive river. Losing hope, she hallucinates her father saying that she feels her mother's presence when she is near nature. Liv thought that finding her mother would reveal the truth about herself, but she now realizes that her journey to find her mother was an impulsive one. Her father tells her that she resembles her mother only in her "eyes and smile" and nothing else. Realizing that he doesn't need to see the woman who abandoned him, he tells Liv to put her father's hallucinations to rest and hands her a postcard.

After that final realization, Liv begins to clear up and heal from all that had plagued her before the plane crash, demonstrating the never-give-up attitude she inherited from her father. She grabs a log and enters the river, hoping it will take her to civilization. As she floats, she envisions the future: having children and reuniting with Danny. In between dreams, fishermen find Liv by the river. A happy family is shown, and Liv spits out the water and takes a breath.

Some viewers wonder if Liv was really rescued in the final scene. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab), co-creators Martin Gero and Brendan Gall gave a clear answer as to whether Liv is alive or not.

"The ending is literally that she will survive," Gall told the outlet. 'We see her wake up again and take that breath. The ambiguous part, the part that is open to interpretation, is whether the images of her and Danny going to the hospital are flash-forwards or a future she imagined when she believed she was going to die. Both are viable."

"But she survives. She will definitely survive."

The confirmation that the show's heroine will make it through her river journey has raised the possibility of a second season for Keep Breathing. The show is considered a Netflix limited series, but there is always the possibility that the success of a miniseries could lead to a renewal (see "Big Little Lies" and "White Lotus"). It is also encouraged by the fact that the lead actress, Barrera, has expressed a desire to return to the character.

"When I saw it, I kind of turned to (creator Martin Gero) and was like, 'Should I go back and make a season two?'" she told PopSugar (opens in new tab). 'It was the hardest thing I've ever done, but it was so rewarding, so satisfying, so much fun. And all the best things you could ask for in a role, I got in this one."
