The skirt was recently auctioned and sold for more than 10,000 times its original price.Patricia Field, stylist and costume designer for "Sex and the City," was shopping in New York City's Garment District 27 years ago when she found four pieces identical to this tutu in a $5 garbage can. 1998 It wasn't tied to a specific year, like the dress on the Marc Jacobs runway.
"I showed them to Sarah Jessica, and she loved them. 'Some people on the show didn't get it right away, but she really connected with the idea. We ended up shooting three outfits for the opening, and this was the most original concept."
Julian's Auctions, which sold the piece, estimated that it would sell for between $8,000 and $12,000, a much lower estimate of its value to "Sex and the City" lovers. The tulle skirt sold for an eye-popping $52,000 after 24 bids.
In her 2023 memoir, Pat in the City, Field wrote that the tutu condensed a special part of the hit HBO show. The tutu-style skirts were whimsical, adventurous, and unexpected." She also recalled telling the show's creator, Darren Star, that "if this show is a hit, the opening will remain memorable and fresh."
Remember, Field bought five tutus in a $5 trash can because (as any viewer of "Sex and the City" knows) Carrie was going to get hit by a bus in the credits, so she wanted to have multiple tutus available. Parker revealed in February 2022 that she still has one of them. 'A lot of people tell me they have a tutu,' he said. 'I think Pat (Field) has one, and Michael Patrick (King, who directed and wrote many episodes of the show) has one. Where is it, who has it?

By the way, this isn't the only tutu recently sold at auction. Carrie's John Galliano news print silk chiffon strapless gown for Christian Dior (worn in the season 3 episode "Natasha") was also auctioned and ultimately sold for $11,430.
