Carrie Bradshaw's tutu, made famous by the opening of "Sex and the City," sells at auction for 10,000 times its asking price.

[It is the pink tutu worn by Carrie Bradshaw in the opening of Sex and the City. The tiered tutu worn by Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie was purchased in 1997 for only $5. The skirt was recently auctioned and sold for more than 10,000 times its original price.

Patricia Field, stylist and costume designer for "Sex and the City," was shopping in New York City's Garment District 27 years ago when she found four pieces identical to this tutu in a $5 garbage can. 1998 It wasn't tied to a specific year, like the dress on the Marc Jacobs runway.

"I showed them to Sarah Jessica, and she loved them. 'Some people on the show didn't get it right away, but she really connected with the idea. We ended up shooting three outfits for the opening, and this was the most original concept."

Julian's Auctions, which sold the piece, estimated that it would sell for between $8,000 and $12,000, a much lower estimate of its value to "Sex and the City" lovers. The tulle skirt sold for an eye-popping $52,000 after 24 bids.
