Ryan Gosling says he took on the role of Ken for his two daughters - but they haven't seen "Barbie" yet
The world is going crazy for Ken Ryan Gosling and his performance in "Barbie". To us, he is never "just Ken," and to his two daughters with partner Eva Mendes, he is not Ken, he is "just Dad."
And while it seems like the world has seen Gosling's award-winning work in the Greta Gerwig-directed film, Gosling told E! News at the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Saturday, January 13, that his daughters Esmeralda and Amada have not seen Barbie.
"I don't know if they should see their father being Ken. I don't know up to what age is a good age to see your dad that way."
By the way, Esmeralda is 9 and Amada is 7. Gosling has previously said that he took on the role of the iconic dolls for his daughters.
"At first I was like, 'Hey, can we go to Target? ' And then we'd go to Target, and we'd slowly walk down the Barbie aisle. And my wife and I realized, 'Okay, I think it's time to let them have Barbie. Ken wasn't interested either.
And that's why Gosling decided to take on the role of the life-size plastic figures, "a way to create something for them and with them."
So why not show them the film?
Gosling said, "They've seen a little bit of it" and "one day when I sang a big musical number, they came on set." (The daughters have not seen the film, but Mendes is a vocal supporter of the film and Gosling's role.
After "I'm Just Ken" won the award for Best Original Song at the 2024 Critics' Choice Awards, the actress posted a photo of the actor with the caption "I LOVE HIM!!!" with the caption "I LOVE HIM!!!!
Gosling also mentioned Mendes in her acceptance speech for the Kirk Douglas Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Saturday night.
"I got to meet the woman of my dreams, Eva Mendes," he said onstage about what his career has brought him. 'I have two dream kids. I dreamed of making movies one day, and now movies have made my life a dream. So in my opinion, I've never made half of the contributions that movies have made to me."
[22I adore the couple, but I can't have Barbie out of the gate from my children. Those sweet girls deserve to see that cinematic masterpiece.
