Joe Coy Reveals He's Swiftian Amid Antagonism at Golden Globes
Joe Coy spoke about his unpopular Taylor Swift joke at last Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.
"I didn't understand the tussle with Taylor [Swift]," the comedian told the Los Angeles Times.
Coy's joke "came after a football doubleheader, as you know. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL is that there are fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes. It's true."
Coy explained that he was not trying to target Swift herself with the joke, telling the L.A. Times, "The intent of that joke was to make fun of the NFL. The cool thing about the [Golden] Globes is that you don't have to make cutaways for ratings." [Ironically, the broadcast switched to Swift's reaction at this point.
"What hurts me the most is me just supporting Taylor. I bought tickets for my niece," Coy said.
"There's no malice in that joke. That joke is about the NFL continuing to use (her) cutouts. The reason for that is obvious. I'm not saying anything that nobody else is saying, and it's clear what that joke is about -- the NFL."
Whatever the intent of the joke, I don't think anyone could have read it as being aimed at the NFL rather than Swift himself. Swift was there, and as far as I know, no one from the NFL was nominated that night. ......
Coy also claimed that Robert DeNiro really enjoyed the joke about him being old. 'I was like, this guy is so much fun,' he said. And then he did that [Swift] joke, and what happened?"
I'm no expert on why some jokes are funny and some are not, but my hypothesis here is that no one is making fun of Robert DeNiro on a daily basis. Swift, on the other hand, has been getting jokes and criticism all day and must be exhausted. I'm sure I am too.
Thankfully, Sim Liu has promised to keep his pinkie in the air and not make fun of Swift when he hosts the People's Choice Awards next month. Phew!
