Dominic West, who played Prince Charles in "The Crown," explains why his real-life friendship with Prince Harry ended.
In an utterly fascinating world crossover, Dominic West (who plays then-Prince Charles in Netflix's "The Crown") and Prince Harry were once friends.
"I said too much at the press conference, so we kind of lost touch," said West.
When asked by moderator Kate McCann to elaborate on the topic, West explained that their falling out occurred a year after he returned from the 2013 Walking with the Wounded charity event, a trip to Antarctica with wounded veterans. This timeline confirms that West's role as Harry's father in The Crown had nothing to do with the disagreement that would have occurred in 2014. The show first aired on Netflix in 2016, and West has not played Charles' role in years since. The aforementioned press conference took place in 2014.
Regarding the Antarctic trip, Harry was "very much a team player," West said in 2014. 'He seemed to specialize in building latrines. He built this incredible castle-like structure out of blocks to keep the wind out, and it even had a [toilet] roll holder." The flagpole and toilet roll holder were surrounded by snow blocks. It must have taken him 45 minutes to build one." West further explained that Harry dug a hole in the chosen location and built a "crouching platform. He built something incredibly intricate. He had an A-level in art (in high school). And, West added, " I was sitting there, looking out at the beautiful view and thinking, 'This is Royal Flush.' (This cheese does not include wine.) West also revealed that Harry makes "rude jokes that make you want to cover your eyes. For a non-military guy like me, it was quite shocking". So, okay, that's a bit of an overshare, but it doesn't end there.
In a recent interview with "Times Radio," West, reflecting on his 2014 comments and calling Harry "a really cool guy," said, "I think they asked what we did. [And] when we got there, what we did to celebrate. [Two of the Aussies got naked and ran around the pole, but most of us, including Harry, had a big two days with the Icelandic truckers. We drank a lot of liqueurs," he said. He added that "we all drank champagne" from the "favorite prosthesis" of Duncan Slater, an amputee who was injured in Afghanistan in 2009.11]
Harry was more detailed about the trip. According to Page Six, he told the press at the time that the trip "showed people with life-changing injuries" that "anything is still possible" and was "an incredible feat by everyone behind me.
West further explained that he could not ask Harry for advice on playing Charles in The Crown because his friendship with Harry ended "over 10 years ago. Regarding playing the Prince of Wales at that time, West said, "People's perceptions are influenced by the character they read about in the media or see in public, so I tried to find out what was going on in their private lives, what was going on in their minds, what was going on in their private conversations. I think we try to find out what's going on in private, what's going on in their minds, what's going on in their private conversations. Peter (Morgan) imagines them so brilliantly and is firmly grounded in whatever facts we know. 0]
Harry, who of course works closely with Netflix on "The Crown," told James Corden on "The Late Late Show" in 2021, "What that lifestyle is like, what the pressure is to put duty and service above family and everything else. It gives you a rough idea of what it can be like and what can happen from it," he said. I am much more comfortable with 'The Crown' than I am with stories written about my family, my wife, or myself."
