Selena Gomez hints at music hiatus with next album: "I'm tired."
Selena Gomez is the true definition of a multiphenate: singer, actress, and entrepreneur, but she has hinted that she may possibly pause (or retire permanently, we don't want to see that) one of those titles.
On a scheduled January 7 episode of the "Smartless" podcast (obtained by E. News), Gomez said that she has "one more album" before quitting her music career." I started having a lot of fun with music, and touring was really fun," she said. But at the same time I was doing a TV show ("The Wizards of Waverly Place"), which I really enjoyed, so I kept doing that. But as I got older, I started thinking, 'I need to find something I can settle down to.'"
She added, "I feel like I have another album in me, but I'll probably choose acting. I'm tired and I want to chill."
Gomez released her first solo album, Stars Dance, in 2013, followed by Revival in 2015 and Rare in 2020. She has appeared on television in both scripted (two-time Emmy-nominated Only Murders in the Building) and non-scripted series (Selena + Chef), and was cast in the musical comedy film Emilia Perez, which was shot in Paris last year. She is set to appear in the upcoming film. Gomez has not toured since her 2016 "Revival" tour, Page Six reports. Gomez did 55 shows until his former assistant Teresa had what she calls a "psychotic break": at one point, she said, 'I don't want to live right now. At one point, she said, 'I don't want to live right now. ' Wait, what? I looked into her eyes and there was nothing there. It was pitch black. I was so scared. I don't want to do this anymore. Let's end this. Let's go home."
Gomez was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder and received treatment at a mental health facility after the tour. Since receiving treatment, Gomez has become a mental health advocate, and in May 2022 she spoke at a mental health forum at the White House.
In addition to her advocacy work and dual careers in music and acting (now we know why she is tired), Gomez is also an entrepreneur-she founded the cosmetics company Rare Beauty in 2019. Among her many pursuits, Gomez once said, "I think of myself more as an actress. I do music because I'm very passionate about my music. I love making music. I love inspiring people. I love to write really fun, great songs. But that's usually all I do. As for acting, I work really hard and I want to do it for a long time. So that's what I want to be recognized for most professionally."
On the "Smartless" podcast, Gomez revealed that Disney wanted her to be a "triple threat" when she was in "The Wizard of Waverly Place," which she said was the starting point for her musical career. "I wanted to be an actress," she said." I never intended to be a singer full time, but apparently that hobby turned into something else." As for Disney, she added. "Disney is a machine, I would say, and in a way they forcefully demand that I know how to sing so that I can sing the (show's) theme song. They know how to package someone and make them triple-threat."
She told the hosts, "I don't think I'm the best singer, but I know how to tell a story and I love being able to write songs." Gomez also mentioned the mental health struggles she experienced due to overwork: "I went to the mental hospital, I canceled my tour," she said.
"I've been to the mental hospital, I've canceled tours," she said.
Gomez has not released an album since 2020, but she did release "Single Soon" - possibly the first single from her next (and possibly last) record - in the summer. In 2023, Gomez and Afrobeats star Lema's song "Calm Down" reached the Top 10 that year and was certified triple platinum.
