Jennifer Lawrence's Ballet Shoes Convince 2010s Business Casual to Make a Comeback
2023 was a great style year for Jennifer Lawrence. Her most glamorous outfits consisted of basic pieces. You may have noticed her love of fine coats and structured pants from The Row. Most noticeable, however, is her recent return to the business casual of the 2010s in her outfits. Now called corporate-core, back then the trend was the everyday casual staple of a blazer with a statement necklace and ballet flats worn outside the office; JLAW especially favors the latter: when out to dinner in Los Angeles, Lawrence paired a simple monotone look with ballet flats, reaffirming that the often pariah but undeniably timeless shoe is not going away anytime soon.
Lawrence kept the monochromatic look simple, consisting of a leather blazer, slip skirt, sweater, and flats. The leather blazer, along with the suede flats, added an interesting texture to her overall outfit.
We're betting that at least one aspect of her outfit is from The Row, although we can't be 100 percent sure. (Perhaps her cozy sweater and sleek midi skirt are by her favorite luxury brand.) Lawrence kept the rest of her look minimal, adding only a few gold necklaces and keeping her blonde hair loose and wavy.
We know this is not the actress' most exciting look, but she continues to modernize our ideal business casual ensemble, especially for a night out. Earlier in the fall, she wore slacks and a white button-down in New York City, which is a departure from the typical contemporary nightlife look. While not exactly business casual, Lawrence also embraces another important 2010s aesthetic: hipster. Her too-cool-for-cool uniform is a coat, square glasses, and a chunky beanie.
As we enter the new year, it is only natural to anticipate the trending items and styles to come, but it is safe to say that Corporate Core and all its glory will continue to be popular. Perhaps it is a reaction to the loungewear that dominated our lives during the pandemic, or perhaps it is nostalgia for the 2010s. Either way, buttoned-up items like blazers, pants, and button-downs are going to be our go-to items this year more than ever. (Some may face ballet flat fatigue, but interesting materials like mesh and sheer make these shoes fun again. ) [With Taylor Swift wearing heeled loafers, Lawrence beckoning in the 2010s, slouchy totes once again gaining popularity, and Celine sending skinny jeans down the runway, it's clear that nostalgia for this era is real. In short, it's time to re-download Tumblr and dust off the circle skirt, the 2010s are back!
