Kim Kardashian: Hollywood" Game Over

Kim Kardashian has announced that she is ending her eponymous game "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood," which was released nearly a decade ago and took the world by storm.

The mobile game allowed players to create their own virtual celebrity and rise in fame to go from "E-list" to "A-list" celebrity. In addition to Kardashian, many other familiar (pixelated) faces were featured, including Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, and Kris Jenner.

The game was a huge success upon its release in June 2014, generating millions of dollars over its 10 years of operation.

The game's popularity experienced a huge resurgence during the 2020 pandemic, reportedly boosting game developer Glu Mobile's revenues.

Despite being free to download, players were able to purchase virtual currency within the app to buy clothes, shoes, and accessories and speed up their progress.

Aside from its economic impact, Polygon's Petrana Radulovic named it one of the top 100 games of the decade for 2019. It was recognized for being "majestically tailored for young women" and for being "perhaps the greatest demonstration of the potential for success of mobile games for girls."

Many in the industry believe that the game has inspired the production and funding of far more female-oriented games.

So why shut down a game as successful as "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood"?

"I am so grateful to everyone who has loved and played 'Kim Kardashian: Hollywood' over the past 10 years," Kardashian explained in a statement to People." This journey has meant so much to me, but I realized it was time to focus that energy on my other passions. I want to thank the Glu team and the many people behind the scenes who worked so diligently to make it a success."

Kardashian is clearly very focused on Skims as well as her many other ventures, and continues to be the biological parent of her four children. She may have felt that the game was taking time away from other possibilities.

Or perhaps it is the image represented by the game: a young aspiring celebrity, exactly as many of us saw Kardashian more than a decade ago - not the successful businesswoman and entrepreneur she has proven herself to be. Perhaps she feels that the game holds tired stereotypes about her and does not want to associate them with her brand any more.

Or perhaps this decision was made by Glu Mobile despite the game's cult following and success.

According to players, it had become apparent in recent months that the developer had little interest in the game. Updates have been so limited that one dedicated fan created a petition about the issue.

"As an avid fan of 'Kim Kardashian: Hollywood,' I am deeply saddened by its current state." These updates were not just for new content, but to keep the community engaged and excited."

The app has been removed from all stores and in-app purchases are no longer available. Players who already have the game can continue to use it until April 8, 2024.
