Meryl Streep praises "Barbie" and says it "saved the movie and all of our jobs last summer."

That's high praise from the Queen of Hollywood. With "Barbie" likely to sweep the awards race at tomorrow's Golden Globes, Meryl Streep has praised the film for "saving the movie and all of our jobs last summer," Variety reports.

Her comments are reminiscent of Steven Spielberg's comments last year when he thanked Tom Cruise for saving the movie industry with "Top Gun": Spielberg told Cruise, "You saved Hollywood's ass and you may have saved theatrical distribution. (Seriously, "Top Gun": seriously, "Top Gun: Maverick" may have saved the entire theatrical distribution industry.) Streep said at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards that the savior film of 2023 is the movie "Barbie," which became the highest-grossing movie of the year with a staggering $1.4 billion in ticket sales (it is also Warner Bros.' highest-grossing movie of all time).

Streep took the stage at the awards ceremony after Billy Eilish and Phineas won for their Barbie soundtrack. 'I just want to say to Billy and Phineas that you guys delivered a love bomb for Barbie,' Streep said. Last summer you saved the film and saved all of us our jobs." You brought joy to countless generations and genders, and you, my children, should ride that wave until you are old and jaded like me."

Barbie is currently nominated for nine Golden Globe Awards and a record 18 Critics' Choice Award nominations, according to Variety. Barbie's soundtrack has been nominated for 12 Grammy Awards, and her original songs "What Was I Made For?" "Dance the Night" and "I'm Just Ken" are up for an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Despite its overwhelming success, Margot Robbie, who played the lead role in the film, is skeptical that Barbie 2 will be made.

"It's funny how in this day and age everyone is so quick to talk about sequels," she said. I don't think that was the case twenty years ago." This was not made to be a trilogy. We want to make more films that have the effect of Barbie. I don't know if it has to be 'Barbie 2. I don't know if it has to be 'Barbie 2,' but I wonder if we could make another big, original, daring idea with a great filmmaker, a big budget, and the trust of a huge conglomerate that could really play. [Robbie, an actress and producer, told Variety that she would love to direct, and that her experience working with directors is why she wants to direct herself. As an actor," she said, "I get to work with a lot of great directors and watch them work. It's like having a front row seat to the best master classes in the world. But directing is an important ambition of mine."

However, it may not happen anytime soon. She previously told Variety magazine in 2022 that directing is "not something I'm in a rush to do" because she is fulfilled with her acting career. As an actor, she said, "I really enjoy being able to see how a lot of other directors work and how they do things. It's very informative."

In a new Variety interview, Robbie said her plate is full with producing jobs that keep her extremely busy. She said, "The trouble is, as a producer, as tough as it is to say no, you get so excited about everything you could produce that it ends up taking up all your time."
