Amanda Seyfried reunites with "Mamma Mia! reunited with her co-star Meryl Streep of "Mamma Mia! What Happiness Do We Want to See?
There were many heartwarming co-star reunions at last night's Golden Globes, but our favorite of all was the 2008 film Mamma Mia! (more on the 2018 sequel later), was the mother-daughter duo of Meryl Streep (Donna) and Amanda Seyfried (Sophie)
The film, based on an ABBA song, featured Streep and Seyfried as well as Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, and an ensemble cast that included Streep and Seyfried. Seyfried's reaction to seeing her on the red carpet as her on-screen mother, Streep, surprised her was priceless. When Seyfried agreed to have her picture taken, Streep kissed her on the cheek.
Streep was nominated last night for Best Supporting Female Actor in a Television Role for "Only Murderers in the Building" and Seyfried was the presenter.
Seyfried appeared in both the 2008 original and the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, but (spoiler alert) Streep's Donna died between the two films. According to Entertainment Weekly, fans of the film have been clamoring for a third film for years, and both Seyfried and Streep have repeatedly said they are open to making one. (Could their clash last night be the start of some kind of conversation?)
"I'll do anything," Streep told Vogue last year. 'I have to schedule some knee scouting before the shoot, but if you have an idea that excites me, I'm totally open to it.'
Streep seems to be storyboarding (at least with herself) how Donna will return after her death. She said, "I told [producer Judy Kramer], 'If you can figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I'm on board with that.' It's like a soap opera where Donna comes back and reveals that it was her twin sister who died. Maybe we'll call it 'The Grand Mamma Mia,'" he added jokingly! he added jokingly.
Seyfried is also likely to participate, telling Collider in 2020. Last May, Kramer told Deadline that a third musical film was in the "early stages" and that he wanted to bring Streep back for it. 'There's a story there, and I think Meryl should be back, and if the script is right, I think she'll be back. Kramer said, "I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but I know there's a trilogy out there."
In addition to reuniting with Seyfried, Streep also reunited with Emily Blunt, the former star of The Devil Wears Prada. (Blunt was also nominated last night for Best Supporting Female Actor for "Oppenheimer.")
