Lily Gladstone's Golden Globe earrings were a beautiful tribute to indigenous people

Fashion shows its true value when it tells a story. At last night's 2024 Golden Globe Awards, Lily Gladstone's ensemble was loaded with meaning. The Killers of the Flower Moon actress, who is of Blackfeet and Nez Perce descent, made history as the first indigenous person to win the award for Best Actress. Styled by Jason Lembert, Gladstone wore a custom Valentino gown and accessorized with dangly beaded earrings by Blackfeet and Cree artist Reneez Omeasoo. She is a pioneer in keeping indigenous culture alive through style, and Gladstone's Golden Globe earrings were a lovely reminder of the impact fashion can have when it transcends mere good-looking design.

Gladstone's look was stunningly minimalist. She wore a strapless ivory dress with a black textured cape loosely layered over her shoulders. Makeup was applied with soft pink flecks around the eyes and lips. Her hair was styled in a braided updo, a nod to her indigenous heritage.

Complementing her stunning Blvgari necklace were Omaesoo beaded earrings consisting of a black and white beaded design on a contrasting gold frame. This intricate frame design was inspired by Blackfeet culture. Omaesoo, owner of Antelope Women Designs, says, "The idea of a picture frame came to me when creating the simple mirror blackfeet design. In these earrings, the flat bead centers are embraced by dramatic edges, each texture serving as a small, imposing picture frame that holds a slice of Blackfeet culture."

In accepting the award, Gladstone spoke in the language of the Blackfeet, repeatedly acknowledging the impact of his historic win. 'This award is not just about me,' she said. 'It is for all the little Native children who have dreams and see themselves expressed in our own language, in our own stories.'

"We are incredibly proud of our same Blackfeet sister," Omaes tells Marie Claire.

"It was so heartwarming to hear her introduce herself in our native language. I am incredibly grateful to have been a part of this moment in history."

[10 Throughout the press tour for [Killers of the Flower Moon], Gladstone used her platform to highlight indigenous designers. At the Cannes Film Festival, Gladstone wore earrings by Jamie Okuma, the first indigenous designer to be selected by the CFDA. She also wore earrings by Shelby Liane Gorman and others throughout the tour for the film's official photo call.

It is beautiful to see Gladstone weave cultural pride into her fashion legacy, and we look forward to her continuing to do so as awards season continues.
