Ryan Reynolds Calls Himself "Mr. Lively" When He Wins Emmy for Deadpool Mask
Ryan Reynolds may be an actor, entrepreneur, Deadpool, and former Sexiest Man Alive, but he wants the world to know that, in his words, he is also the proud Mr. [Blake] Lively.
"Welcome to Wrexham," a show about Wrexham A.F.C., the Welch soccer club co-owned by Reynolds and Rob McElhenny, won an impressive five Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2024. Reynolds "was not at Sunday's awards ceremony" (cough, cough), but Deadpool (Reynolds' beloved Marvel character) did appear to accept the award (a look that included his Deadpool mask and suit and tie).
"Wow, Mr. Lively couldn't be here to accept this broken Emmy, so he sent me in his place," Reynolds said in a speech shared via Instagram (and per Us Weekly magazine). 'First and foremost, Lexam, we love you. Thank you for letting Rob and another man tell your story, Cymru am byth (Wales, forever). Also, thank you to the Academy for giving us this honor. (If you're wondering what I mean by "broken Emmy", I appeared with Hugh Jackman's broken Emmy in hand.) There's a lot going on here.)
Reynolds continued to refer to himself as "Mr. Lively," a sweet nod to his wife, to whom he has been married since 2012 and has four children. Reynolds and Lively occasionally sneak in sweet moments with each other, but are better known for playfully searing each other on social media.
At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, "Welcome to Rexam" won the award for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, as well as Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program Video Editing, Outstanding Reality Program Director, Outstanding Reality Program Sound Mixing (single or multi-camera), and Outstanding Reality Program Cinematography.
"Wow, an Emmy, what an incredible honor," McElhenney said in part of his virtual acceptance speech. 'There are so many people to thank. I've waited 16 years for this moment and I have so much to say."
McElhenney was then interrupted by Reynolds, wearing a Deadpool mask, who said absolutely nothing.
Welcome to Wrexham first aired in 2022, about two years after Reynolds and McElhenny bought the team in 2020. The show chronicles the trials and tribulations of the team as a low-level Welsh soccer team and (spoiler alert) the club's rise to promotion (exaggeration) to the English Football League after 15 years. In April 2023, when Wrexham won the domestic league, "Rob and I kind of fainted at this moment, but somehow we will never forget it," Reynolds, or Mr. Lively, said on Instagram.
