The lyrics "Zig-A-Zig-A" in "Wannabe" have a deep meaning hidden in them - but the Spice Girls will not talk about it.
In the mid-1990s, several music with unintelligible titles and lyrics arose: "MMMBop." Tubthumping". And the phrase "zig-a-zig-a" in the Spice Girls' 1996 debut single "Wannabe." [Spice Girl Melanie "Mel B" Brown said on "Today with Hoda & Jenna" that she never knew what the lyrics meant and probably never will; according to People, it was Mel B herself who wrote the dingy lyrics, and their meaning is "group secret."
"Wannabe" was co-written by all five Spice Girls (Mel B, Jeri Halliwell Horner, Emma Bunton, Melanie "Mel C" Chisholm, and Victoria Beckham) and producers Matt Lowe and Richard Stannard. And this group is the only group that knows the true meaning of these lyrics.
In an interview, Jenna Bush Hager said that she and co-star Hoda Kotb "have been thinking" about the meaning of the lyrics, to which Scary Spice replied, "It's a group secret. But you can interpret it however you want." She added, "I made that word up. If I told you, I would have to kill you both. We love you both."
But Bush Hager kept pressing on. Is it what we think it is?" she asked, suggesting that the lyrics were risqué." You won't stop pushing!" Mel B said. Mel B said. 'I won't tell on you. She refused to even tell Bush Hager and Kotb what the lyrics meant during the commercial break. 'I won't tell you,' she mimed, her lips pouting."
"Wannabe" reached No. 1 in more than 20 countries, and listeners resonated with the lyrics about valuing friendship over romance; in July 2021, the Spice Girls celebrated the song's 25th anniversary by marking the milestone on social media." Jiggah Jiggah!!!!" Banton wrote. "It's so inspiring and we want to thank all of our amazing fans for making five girls' dreams come true, for loving the songs we wrote, for copying our dance moves, and for embracing our personalities!"
Mel C. said, "25 years! Can you believe it? This song has taken us on an incredible journey. So much love and thanks to everyone today, the amazing Matt and Biff, and my beloved Spice Girls. So many memories! The Strongroom, St. Pancras, those stairs! And backflips all over the world! Happy Birthday, Wannabee! Can't wait to zig a zig ahh again!"
Halliwell Horner added, "Wow, a song that changed the lives of five girls in England." She also said, "When we first got together, I bought each of the girls a gold ring as a symbol of our friendship. It is a special bond that will stand the test of time. I am so proud of all of us. I am proud of all that we have accomplished together. To all of our wonderful fans around the world, thank you so much for your support and loyalty. Love, Ginger." (Halliwell Horner was Ginger Spice, Banton was Baby Spice, Mel C. was Sporty Spice, and Beckham was Posh Spice.)
Finally, Posh herself said, "I can't believe it's been 25 years since 'Wannabe' was released! The song that changed everything...! The song that changed everything. ......."
