Spotify CEO Suggests "Archetypes" Didn't Make Consumers "Happy" Enough to Guarantee a Second Season

The second season of Meghan Markle's "Archetypes" podcast was not renewed, and the Sussexes' contract with Spotify ended in June.

Much has been said since then, and much remains to be said. However, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek shed a little light on the situation in an interview with the BBC.

Asked why Archetypes was removed from the streaming platform's program, Eck said, "We thought new innovation needed to happen here. We thought, 'If we come in, we can provide a great experience that will make consumers very happy and open up new avenues for new creators'" (from the Los Angeles Times).

Regarding how Spotify attempted to compete with similar platforms, Eck continued, "We're not going to compete with them, but we're going to learn from them. We have learned from them and are moving forward and wish them the best of success in the future, all of which we did not update."

In June, Eck told the BBC, "We are going to be very diligent about how we invest in future content agreements. And the ones that are not doing well, of course, we will not renew. And those that are doing well, of course we will look at them on a case-by-case basis with respect to relative value."

Archetypes did not seem to bring in as much revenue as Spotify had hoped, but it was still a very successful show: it won the Pop Podcast of 2022 at the People's Choice Awards and reportedly had an estimated 10 million listeners It was. At one point, it even beat Joe Rogan's controversial podcast on Spotify's charts.

It is unclear whether the Duchess of Sussex intends to resume podcasting in the future. Currently, the most confirmed of her and Harry's upcoming projects is a film adaptation of Carly Fortune's best-selling book "Let's Meet at the Lake"; for the rest, we will have to wait and see.
