This was many, many years ago, but spoiler alert, all was well between Prince William and then-Kate Middleton. (They've been married for 12 years, are parents of three children, and seem very happy.) But when the couple, who had been together for almost five years, split in April 2007, many royal followers were unsure why - was it because Kate was ready for marriage and William was not? The Mirror reported, "One reason for the decision was that William decided not to spend New Year's Eve 2006 with the Middletons," it reported. (The Middletons are Kate's family, consisting of her parents Michael and Carol and younger siblings Pippa and James.)

William's choice not to spend the vacations with Kate's family "reportedly led the couple to reevaluate their relationship and ultimately decide to take a break," the Mirror wrote. (William actually called Kate to say goodbye while she was at work, and the current Princess of Wales received the call "in the parking lot of her London office," the Mirror reports.) But now that I think about it, that phone call was definitely an altercation between girlfriend and boyfriend."

The story ends well: after a brief breakup, William and Kate were back together by July 2007, about three months later; in a 2010 engagement interview, Kate said of their breakup, "I wasn't very happy then, but it actually made me stronger."
