00s fashion moments we can't miss
The 2000s (sometimes called the Y2K era) were a truly wild fashion moment, if you think back; the 1990s started several trends that exploded at the turn of the century (low-rise jeans, visible underwear, and a general "why not?" attitude). Remember Juicy Couture? True Religion" We were obsessed with visible underwear. While there are a few trends that have played out as worthy of our attention and money - long denim skirts, bustier tops, chokers, pleated minis - there are many that we are quietly praying we leave behind forever.
There's a lot of love and self-deprecation in this slideshow: if you grew up during this era, you can probably count at least 10 of these trends that you wore yourself during that decade; if you want to relive the height of 00s fashion, keep scrolling. I want you to.
The "ironic" trucker hat (worn, but not really a trucker) was all the rage in the early to mid-00s. Usually, this style was a completely random addition to an outfit, and there was even a choice to make it a completely different color. Not surprisingly, it made a major comeback in the early 2020s.
In the 00s, eye-pleasing hemlines appeared: the Paris Hilton skirt was a maxi, mini, knee-length, and mini skirt all in one. Paris Hilton's skirt is a maxi, mini, knee-length, and mini skirt all in one.
Technically, there are a few Christina Aguilera trends (skunk hair and low-rise pants. The same goes for biker gloves.
Technically, these are two 00s trends (micro bangs and mullets), but this is probably one of the more memorable examples of teeny tiny wispy bangs that hit way above the eyebrows. Even Scarlett Johansson, with her generally impeccable style, cannot overcome hair that is too high.
One of the unfortunate remnants from the 90s is the insistence on wedge heels for any occasion. Of course, this is a casual event, but Megan Fox's black wedge sandals tell the story of a day at the beach, not "red carpet prep."
We're getting a lot of trends in one outfit (jeans under a big random belt and knee-high boots, I see you), but my eye is always drawn to Kim Kardashian's low neckline tunic and dazzling white cami underneath. I really loved the visible layers.
Not everyone was sporting a shade of pink fuchsia at the time, but I can absolutely guarantee that there are a few people who saw this photo and decided to make spiky hair their personality for the next few months.
There is nothing wrong with numerous hair colors on one head. However, when the stripes are several inches thick and concentrated on the top of the head, 1) they are hard to maintain and 2) they are a really grating style. It's a shame, because Kelly Clarkson is doing the best she can.
The natural conclusion to the chunky highlights trend is, of course, the "skank hair" aesthetic (a combination of very light and very dark hair). Whether it was natural hair or extensions, it was seen by many. And Xtina was the biggest champion of the style.
Hilton was the biggest adopter of flashy tracksuits, but many stars (including Britney Spears, Lyndsay Lohan, and J.Lo) wore matching fuzzy outfits while out and about. Yes, even on the red carpet.
Actually, we really like Britney Spears' playful pop art-inspired leggings, but the low-rise mini, satirical Page Six top, and fedora (which, of course, required a hat. We really liked the confusing layers of the 00s.
A trend adjacent to the leggings that stars once loved were fishnet stockings, often worn with shorts, skirts, and high boots. Fishnets never went away, but wearing them casually was decidedly 00s.
The pedal pusher style (below-the-knee pants and leggings) was born in the 90s and lasted into the next decade; add some equally trendy plastic clear shoes, as J.Lo is doing here, and you're all set.
If you've ever had a cinnamon roll and thought, "This would look amazing on my head," then this '00s trend was right up your alley. If one big, swirly bun isn't enough, Gwen Stefani has two.
You knew this was coming. The trend of using underwear as outerwear comes and goes (we've lived with sheer clothing for years), but tucking in a pair of g-pants and taking them to a party felt like a trend from the 00s.
You know what we did in the 00s when we had random outfits that absolutely didn't require a belt? Not just any belt: a really, really wide, chunky one. Just in case.
In hindsight, I hardly know how I got my skinny jeans under my skin-tight knee-high boots (my jeans always wanted to peek out of my top). How did you do it, Kim?
You know it, you love it, it came back in style in the 2020s: the low rise. It's been on this list many times, and for good reason. It used to be a style that was everywhere and it really worked for some people. For me, it didn't. But Paris made the most of it.
If you want a crop, you get a crop; the major jacket style of the 00s was to wear a jacket that stopped at the chest (like a bolero). Not that it matters, but pink abs are really great.
Thin scarves began to be worn around the neck in the late 90s, but by the turn of the century, scarves were thinner, longer, and even unnecessary. Seriously, Lindsay Lohan doesn't even wear jackets.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, got an Ed Hardy T-shirt and decided to go out in it. The Queen of Pop, Madonna, is one of them (here she is on her way to the gym). This style has made a comeback.
Remember when concealer was used as lipstick, and nude rather than nude lip color, which basically served to erase the lips, as J.Lo demonstrates here, was a very specific look? Everyone thought it was the ultimate in beauty.
Celebrities loved wearing sunglasses to big events. Kim Kardashian began to revive this trend.
Crumpled hair wasn't just a '00s trend, but (like many things on this list) we made the most of it. Take a crimper and apply it to the entire head. Don't leave a single strand.
A few years after MC Hammer introduced the wide, voluminous pants of the 80s, we got another kind of voluminous bottom wear: pirate pants. Those pants, bulging in the middle and slimming at the legs, made us look like pears.
In the '00s, there were lots of lace-up pieces, from tops to shoes. What's especially fun about these (matching) Destiny's Child jeans is that the lace-ups continue all the way to the pockets, not just the hems.
Bai Ling, one of the It girls of the 00s, showcased two trends, to be exact: little minis that could accidentally fall off at a moment's notice, and statement belts to go with them. And matching abs that go with everything.
I know there's a lot to look at: non-shirts, pageboy hats, mini-minis, knee-high boots, etc., but why am I focusing on the little metal belly chain, because even in the most bare-bones outfits, we love that little accessory so love it and had to have it with us all the time. In fact, Xtina loved it so much that she added a wallet chain here as well.
By the time Anne Hathaway got on this particular trend train, skirts and dresses over pants were nothing new, but it had reached its most extreme conclusion. It was a very sweaty atmosphere. [Spears and her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake were wearing head-to-toe denim. Frankly, the attention to detail is impressive (matching bags and hats), but no one is copying this Canadian tuxedo.
An unfortunate survivor of the 90s was the micro eyebrow, and while the trend had (fortunately) switched to a thicker look by the end of the decade, there were plenty of celebs who gave us pencil-thin inspiration.
Ah, Beyonce. This was usually an off-the-carpet outfit, but nothing we loved more than a pleated mini and Ugg boots in the 00s. It really is proof of what happens to the best of us.
