Princess Kate, it appears to be a "bone-crushing handshake."
The Princess of Wales is more confident than ever before, and she is attending more royal events solo than ever before. This past Sunday, she made a solo appearance at the Rugby World Cup in Marseille, France, where she watched England defeat Fiji. (Kate is a patron of the English Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League.)
After England's 27-10 win over Fiji, Kate made a surprise appearance in the England rugby team locker room after the game. She shook hands with players in uniforms stained with dirt and grass, some of whom were standing without socks. Kate stood near the muddy cleats on the locker room floor. She was dressed neatly compared to her teammates in a white double-breasted tweed blazer and wide black pants," People wrote. In another photo, Kate smiled as she shook hands and placed a congratulatory hand on Manu Tuilagi's shoulder.
According to the Daily Express, Kate greeted the players with a "great handshake," said body language expert Darren Stanton. There's a great photo of Kate shaking hands with the rugby players in the dressing room. 'If you zoom in on that, you can see it's a bone-crushing handshake, in the best sense of the word. It's not a weak handshake. She has a really strong grip."
Of her body language, Stanton notes that Kate "placed her right hand on one of the rugby players. This is usually considered a gesture of strength, but we know that Kate does not. It is a general gesture of respect and intimacy toward the other person."
Another gesture also caught Stanton's attention, when Kate "placed her left hand on his arm, which is also her own expression of pure joy at seeing him.
"The rugby player seemed a little overwhelmed. [Stanton made special mention of Kate's change in confidence since becoming an active royal in 2011. 'She walks with a swagger,' he said. 'In some contexts, that might imply arrogance, but not with her. She is confident and doesn't look back no matter who she is with."
