[Legendary actress Meryl Streep has been separated from Don Gammer for six years, according to multiple media reports; the two were married in 1978 and just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on September 30. [Don Gammer and Meryl Streep have been separated for over six years and although they will always care about each other, they have chosen separate lives," Streep's representative said in a statement to People.

The couple, who share four children together, have never been incredibly forthcoming and have not been seen together in public since the 2018 Oscars.According to People, Streep was recently spotted in Spain on Friday at the 2023 Princesa de Asturias Awards, where they were spotted wearing wedding rings.

Streep met Gammer, a sculptor whose work has been featured in exhibitions around the world since the early 1970s, through her brother in 1978, the same year she married. At the time, she was grieving the death of her lover, fellow actor John Cazal, from lung cancer. Streep and Gummer hit it off immediately, and were married just six months later at Streep's parents' home; in a 2002 interview with Vogue magazine, Streep shared a rare glimpse of married life, saying that the secret to longevity is "goodwill, carefreeness, and occasionally shutting up. There is no roadmap on how to build a family. It is always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have a great bond of love in my life. I can't imagine abandoning one for the other."

When Streep won the Academy Award for Best Actress for "The Iron Lady" in 2012, Gummer was the first to thank her: "When I thank my husband at the end of my speech, when Don is played to music, everything I value most in our lives, you have given I want him to know that you gave it to me."

The breakup followed news this month that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith - another Hollywood couple we thought had succeeded against all odds - had separated several years ago, and that their separation dates back to 2016.
