Sending Prince George to a boarding school like Eton College would be "sad," says royal expert

After the Prince and Princess of Wales and their eldest son, Prince George, were spotted touring Eton College over the summer, George is expected to follow in his father's footsteps and enroll at the prestigious boarding school for boys in September 2026, when he turns 13. As Marie Claire magazine previously reported, William and Kate disagreed over the decision to send George to Eton, and in the end Kate had to "concede": "Kate has long disagreed with her husband about sending George to Eton, even though it is traditional," a source told "The Daily Express. 'Kate believes that sending George to such a staid, upper-class institution would go against efforts to modernize the monarchy. Besides, she will miss George. She and William argued for years, but William finally won."

William and Prince Harry attended Eton, unlike other men in the royal family, such as Prince Philip and King Charles, who attended Gordonstoun in Scotland.

Because William and Kate are exemplary modern-day royals, one royal expert said it would be "sad" if they sent George to boarding school. Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond said, "They have been the model of a modern royal family and I hope they remain a close-knit family unit, with the children coming home every day after school." She suggested a "compromise," either weekly boarding or "an ad hoc system like some schools are currently using."

"But perhaps they believe there are real benefits to having children learn to be independent from an early age."

Although unlikely and hopefully not going to happen, Bond also urged the Crown Prince and Princess to consider the possibility of becoming the King and Queen while their three children (now ages 5 to 10) are still in school and "their jobs will become even more full-time than they are now."

"It's probably a practical solution," Bond said.

"But for me, the idea of having children and then sending them off to be taken care of by someone else is unthinkable."

Kate was recently seen visiting Marlborough College, which she attended, fueling speculation that Marlborough College may be on the short list for George as well. After being bullied at Downey House, Kate enjoyed her time at Marlborough College, a boarding school in Wiltshire. Kate's younger siblings, Pippa and James Middleton, also attended the college, as did Princess Eugenie.
