Meghan Markle was given the wrong script for her first speech as a British royal and had to think fast

Thankfully, Meghan Markle has decided to pursue a career as a working royal with a background in acting.

On the latest episode of Hello's A Right Royal Podcast, Invictus Games Foundation director David Weissman, in Meghan's first public speech as Prince Harry's fiancée in 2018 admitted that he accidentally delivered the wrong script. The speech was given at the Endeavor Foundation Awards (which Harry "founded to support the aspirations of wounded, injured, and ill service members and veterans," People reported), but Meghan struggled to begin speaking because of the mistake.

"I screwed up at work!"

[7 Weissman said of the incident. It was my first time speaking in public as the [future] Duchess of Sussex. The Royal Foundation was small, so everyone had to split up everything. I had written the script, and her team had asked me to change it at the last minute. But she received the old version and the new version was sent to her co-star, my buddy (British Army veteran) Neil Heritage. And they took the stage and had two different versions of the script."

He added, "I don't know if you remember, but neither of them were arguing, they were saying, 'No, this version,' and the lines were fluffed up in front of everyone in my first opening speech as the (future) Duchess of Sussex." (You can check out the video of X by Rebecca English of the Daily Mail. People reports that Meghan and Heritage laughed quietly, seemingly unable to locate the correct piece of paper to present the "Celebrating Excellence Award" at the podium.)

Weissman joked that he "died a little inside" from his seat next to Harry's front row, but was relieved as the two worked through the moment and the event was reported favorably. Later, Weissman sent Harry an email apologizing for the mishap, and Meghan jumped on the call: "Meghan jumped on the email saying, 'David, it's M, honestly, I really, really don't care,'" Weissman said. She was so sweet."

"People" reported, "Given that her wedding to Harry in May was still months away, it was unusual for Meghan to present the award that evening, as she had not yet officially become a member of the royal family."

"By contrast, Kate Middleton did not make her first speech until nearly a year after her royal wedding to Prince William in 2011.
