Kate Middleton breaks 350-year royal wedding tradition on her wedding day.

Kate Middleton and Prince William's wedding on April 29, 2011, was steeped in tradition in many ways, but in one decision, Kate eschewed a 350-year-old wedding tradition, despite being advised otherwise, the Daily Express The Daily Express reported.

According to royal expert Ashley Pearson, Kate was advised to wear her hair in a neat updo, but instead asked to have it down and flowing.

"According to royal sources, the royal family strongly told Kate that she should wear her hair up for this special occasion. But Kate made up her mind to wear her hair down in long, flowing curls."

Ultimately, the bride won out, "They compromised on her look in the end," Pearson said.

This was not the only tradition broken for their wedding. William himself broke a standard tradition and forbade the bride's father from asking his permission to marry her, he revealed in a 2010 engagement interview.

"I wasn't sure if I should ask Kate's dad first, but it occurred to me that he might actually say 'no,'" William said. So I figured if I asked Kate first, she wouldn't be able to say no either. So that's what I did. It was Kate's father, Michael Middleton.
