Read MorePrince Harry and Meghan Markle's request to return to the United States with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden after Queen Elizabeth's funeral last September was turned down, several media outlets reported today.
Sources told the Daily Mail that it was an immediate no from the White House, adding that the request was "non-mainstream."
"It would have caused such a stir," the source said. It would have strained relations with the royal court and the new king," referring, of course, to King Charles."
The Bidens were two of the many dignitaries who attended the funeral of His late Majesty the King last September 19. They had also attended a reception hosted by King Charles the day before, to which world leaders and foreign royalty had been invited.
Harry and Meghan happened to be in the UK participating in charity work when the Queen's health deteriorated and she eventually passed away on September 8 at the age of 96. When it was decided to return to the U.S. after the funeral, Harry and Meghan's staff "asked the White House if they could fly back to the U.S. on Air Force One."
The U.S. government pays for government personnel to board Air Force One, and President Biden personally pays for his family to board. If Harry and Meghan had been granted permission to board, it was unclear who would pay for their expenses.
The couple has a longstanding relationship with the Bidens, dating back to 2017, when Jill Biden attended Harry's Invictus Games with her husband and then President Barack Obama. However, when invited to the 2022 Games, she was advised not to attend, according to Page Six magazine.
"British officials have told National Security Council staff in working-level conversations that they think the idea will land badly," a source told the Daily Mail. Instead, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chastain, led the U.S. delegation.
OK reported that First Lady Biden wanted to attend and that she and Harry have a warm relationship, bonded by the Warrior Games; in September 2021, after that year's Games were canceled due to a pandemic, the two held a zoom call. Harry told Dr. Biden, "Thank you for all your hard work and continued support over the years. It is wonderful to see you giving your all to so many people around the world, not only those in uniform, but their families as well. Without you, many of them would not be here.
Dr. Biden told Harry, "You live by the simple principle of serving together and recovering together. It is not limited by the flag you wear. Your brothers and sisters-in-arms are connected by something much deeper than the borders that separate us. You have given your time, talent, and hearts to inspire military personnel around the world."
According to The Daily Mail, Dr. Biden also appeared to show signs of support for Harry and Meghan after their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021." The day after the interview aired, Jill Biden wore a lemon-patterned Oscar de la Renta dress to the State Department's International Women of Courage Awards. It looked similar to the Oscar de la Renta dress Princess Meghan had worn a month earlier. Twitter saw Jill's attire as a sign of casual support for Team Sussex. Apparently, so did Princess Meghan, who sent the First Lady a basket of lemons as a token of her appreciation.
President Biden and King Charles met at Windsor Castle earlier this month. During the meeting, President Biden was seen placing his hand on the king's back, which was accused of being against royal protocol, but Prince Charles did not mind the gesture, according to The Independent. Prince Charles was "not at all uncomfortable" with the gesture, the source said. [Harry's brother, Prince William, will be in the United States to attend the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit in New York in September.
