Prince William and Prince Harry coming to this country soon - but for very different reasons
There are nearly 200 countries in this big old world, and the constantly warring brothers Prince William and Prince Harry are planning to go to one of them, if not together, and for very different reasons.
Prince William's camp announced in May that the third annual Earthshot Awards ceremony will be held in Singapore on November 7. It was just learned yesterday that Harry will also head to the Southeast Asian island nation to play polo in the 2023 Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup at the Singapore Polo Club on August 12. Sentebale is a charity founded in 2006 by Harry and Prince Siso of Lesotho that supports children and youth in Lesotho, Africa, and the annual polo event helps raise funds for the organization.
Just as Harry founded the Sentebale (meaning "Remember Me," a favorite flower of his mother, Princess Diana), William and David Attenborough created the Earthshot Prize in 2020. (Each recipient will receive a £1 million grant to continue their work. The prize will be awarded for the first time in 2021 and will run annually through 2030.)
"The Earthshot Prize aims to show the world that solutions to the biggest environmental problems we face exist," William said in a statement announcing Singapore as the third site for the awards ceremony. After two years of uncovering high-impact ideas and innovations, we are delighted that the Earthshot Prize will be held in Singapore to recognize the groundbreaking solutions of the 2023 finalists." Earthshot is a play on John F. Kennedy's moonshot, which aimed to send Americans to the moon by the end of the 1960s (a goal that was achieved despite the fact that many thought it was impossible).
William (and Princess Catherine, who had been by her husband's side for the past two award ceremonies) would travel to New York City on September 19 to attend the second annual Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit before heading to Singapore.
Harry will first arrive in Singapore in less than two weeks, during which time he will compete in polo with the Royal Salute Sentivale team, according to People. After spending a gap year in Lesotho, Harry fell in love with the country and founded a charity that helps children and youth affected by poverty, inequality, and HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and southern Africa Since the inaugural event in 2020, the Polo Cup has raised more than $14 million for Centiver raised.
"The annual Polo Cup is an integral part of Sentebale's vital work to keep children and youth healthy, strong, and active," Harry said in a statement. The funds raised this year will support our Clubs and Camps program, which provides intensive psychosocial support to young people living with HIV. "At a time when being HIV-positive is no longer a death sentence, we need to help young people know their status, stay healthy, and get back on track to a life of health and wellness," Harry said, stigma, we are empowering them to break this cycle. We are delighted to be returning to the famed Singapore Polo Club in August. We are also very grateful to the polo community and our sponsors, especially ISPS Handa, for their continued commitment to the youth of Lesotho and Botswana"
.
For the past two years, the Polo Cup has been held in Aspen, Colorado, much closer to Harry's current home base of Montecito, California, for both the 2021 and 2022 competitions. since it began in 2010, Barbados, Harry's former home United Kingdom, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Italy, and in 2017, Singapore.
Before heading to Singapore, Harry will stop by the International Sports Promotion Association Sport Value Summit in Tokyo on August 9.
Environmental protection is a deeply important cause to William (and to Harry, along with his father, King Charles), and helping the youth of Southern Africa is very important to Harry (as is polo, in which William has the same interest). These two causes, and the organizations they have each established to support them, bring them both to the same country. If this is not the catalyst for an ice-breaking conversation between the (supposedly still out of touch) brothers, I don't know what is.
