Serena Williams Reveals the Gender of Her Second Child in the Most Epic Way
Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian revealed the gender of their second child in a rather fantastic way: according to People, the couple used a drone to find out whether their daughter Olympia would have a brother or sister.
Williams arrived at her "baby shower-slash-gender reveal" party, as she put it, wearing a pink and white skirt and top that highlighted her baby bump, leaving no doubt that she is "Team Pink," People reports.
"I'm a little nervous because I don't have a contingency plan in case it turns out to be a boy," she said in a video of the party posted on YouTube yesterday.
The theme of the party was "Our Next Great Adventure," and the party was decorated with a rainbow-colored balloon arch.
As for the drone display, Williams didn't know it was going to happen: "Pink for the girls and blue for the boys is the standard cake, but Ohanian ordered a yellow cake to throw off the tennis superstar," People reported.
"I'm doing this because I want to troll her and Olympia into thinking this is a Jelly Bean unveiling," he said, referring to the second child's apparent pet name. 'She's going to cut into this cake and probably be disappointed and hopefully thank me for trolling her. But I don't know what's going to happen. She might see this cake and come out. She might look at this cake, roll her eyes, and say, 'This guy only did one job, and he made a God-cake gender announcement to me. But we'll see. There's unveiling after unveiling."
"Williams cuts into the cake, sees that it is yellow, smiles, and puts it on a plate ...... moved to smoosh it on Alexis' face," People reported.
"We're actually going to reveal the gender of Jelly Bean," Ohanian said. 'But the way we're going to do it is with a little style and a lot of glamorous lights.' He then asked the party DJ to play music and "draw attention to the sky," and after the party guests groaned, a drone lit up the sky and spelled out "Girl." The family of three squealed with delight as guests applauded and cheered.
Williams revealed her second pregnancy at the Met Gala in May, posting on Instagram, "I was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the three of us to the Met Gala." The news comes after an essay she wrote for Vogue last year in which she discussed her desire to add another child to her family. She revealed that when she began her tennis career, "I never thought about having children."
"There were times when I wondered if I should bring a child into this world of so many problems," Williams wrote. I wasn't sure or comfortable being around babies and children."
In an essay announcing her retirement from professional tennis, Williams talked about how Olympia often wished for a baby sister and wanted to be a big sister." She wrote, "Last year, Alexis and I were trying to have another child, and I recently received information from my doctor that put my mind at ease and made me feel that we could expand our family whenever we were ready. 'As an athlete, I definitely don't want to get pregnant again. I have to be two feet in or two feet out in tennis."
[22Williams said she is ready to leave: "I think, I should have had 30 more Grand Slams. I had my chance after I came back from childbirth." From a C-section to a second pulmonary embolism to a Grand Slam final. I played while breastfeeding. I played through postpartum depression. But I didn't get there, shoulda, woulda, coulda, I didn't show up the way I should have, the way I could have. But I showed up 23 times. In fact, that's extraordinary. But these days, if I had to choose between building my tennis resume or starting a family, I would choose the latter."
