Ryan Gosling says his two daughters don't understand why he wants to play Ken in the "Barbie" movie.

It's here, it's here, it's here at last! This is the week that Barbie finally hits theaters. The Greta Gerwig-directed film stars Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken. (Marie Claire recently reported that it was actually Gosling's idea to sing this ballad.)

"People" reports that his children Esmeralda and Amada, his children with longtime girlfriend Eva Mendes, were confused as to why he wanted to play Ken in the first place, since he never played with Barbie himself. 'It's the kids who got to know Barbie,' he said. I think they're confused as to why I would want to play Ken. They have no use for Ken."

His daughters also helped him prepare for scenes that needed special work, he told the outlet. 'So they, too, were careless. And they came on set that day and were a big support and did it with me off camera."

Gosling and Mendes have been together for 12 years, since meeting while filming "Place Beyond the Pines" in 2011. (Esmeralda is 8 and Amada is 7.) Gosling and Mendes played a family in the film, which premiered in 2012, and it inspired the actor to want to have his own family with Mendes. Before I met her, I wasn't thinking about kids, but after meeting Eva, I realized I didn't want to have kids without her," he told "GQ" earlier this year

.

"There was a moment in 'Place Beyond the Pines' where we were pretending to be a family.

The couple is fiercely private about their relationship, especially their children. Mendes said in 2020, "I have always had clear boundaries when it comes to men and children. She wrote on Instagram, "Of course I talk about my children with restrictions, but I don't post pictures of my daily life."

"I don't have their consent because my children are still small and don't really understand what it really means to post images. And I won't post their images until they are old enough to give me their consent."
