Why Princess Kate Wore All Green at Wimbledon This Year

Princess Kate has appeared at Wimbledon three times this year, wearing green on each occasion; on July 4, making her Wimbledon debut in 2023, she wore a mint green Balmain blazer (her first time wearing this celebrity line) with a white pleated skirt and heels and heels. For Saturday's women's singles final, she wore a tennis-ball green Self-Portrait dress, and for yesterday's men's singles final, she wore an emerald green Laurent Mouret dress.

Kate doesn't often wear one color continuously when competing at Wimbledon. Last summer, for example, she wore two dresses with polka dots in different shades of blue and a bright yellow. The year before last, she wore a green, pink, blue and white dress, again not in one color.

So why? Several reasons immediately come to mind. Green is Kate's favorite color (she has said in the past that she likes it because it reminds her of nature). For the Wimbledon look, she chose three very different shades, showing her range. They are a tribute to the official colors of Wimbledon, unofficially named "Wimbledon Purple" and "Wimbledon Green," referring to the patronage the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club received from Queen Elizabeth in 2016.

"Happily, the green also looks especially good on the princess's sun-kissed complexion and flowing brunette hair," Tatler wrote.

Kate's Balmain blazer was perhaps also a sartorial nod to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana: "The vintage ensemble, a green Catherine Walker blazer that Princess Diana wore to Trooping the Colour in 1988 The dress bore a striking resemblance to the one worn by Princess Diana at Trooping the Colour in 1988," Tatler reported.

Kate is a fan of the Self-Portrait line, and for this look, "Kate dressed in an optical illusion frock with a pretty pleated skirt and bouclé blazer sewn into one silhouette," the outlet wrote.

"Not even the windy weather could disturb the royal beauty's refined good looks, and her brunette hair remained impeccable in a flowing half-up, half-down style.

For her final look, she went to another favorite, Laurent Mouret, in an emerald green midi dress by the designer. It was a departure from the "Welsh blue," a color that Kate and her husband, Prince William, and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, often coordinate. (That's right, George and Charlotte were both in blue yesterday.) Blue has become such a favorite of the royal family that Marie Claire magazine recently reported on it (dozens more blue looks have appeared since that article, most of them from the Welsh Five).

"Markéta Bondrusova and Carlos Alcaraz may have won the silver medals," wrote Tatler, referring to the winners of the women's and men's singles finals, respectively. Next year in purple."
