Read More"This Is Us" is one of the most beloved TV shows in recent memory, and one of its stars has opened up about how much money she makes from her leftover streaming check.
In fact, it's literally pennies, Mandy Moore, who played the main character Rebecca Pearson on the show from 2016 to 2022, said while picketing outside Disney in Burbank, CA as part of the SAG-AFTRA strike Page Six According to the magazine, Moore "revealed that she gets paid next to nothing when fans stream her hit show This Is Us, even though the Emmy-winning series is one of the most popular TV shows of the past seven years," the magazine reports.
Moore spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the importance of the strike, telling the magazine, "The residual wage issue is a huge issue. We are in an incredibly privileged position as working actors on shows that have been very successful in one way or another. ...... But for years before us, many actors in our position were able to live on their residuals, or at least pay their bills."
The residual check was tiny, Moore told the outlet, "like an 81-cent check, very small," from Hulu, which acquired "This Is Us" in 2017.
"I was talking to my business manager, and he said he received a residual check for one and two cents," she said.
Moore was on the picket line with Katie Lowes, who herself had starred in another successful show, Scandal. She, too, said she has been making literally pennies since Netflix acquired the streaming rights to the show. "If you're someone who was lucky enough to be in a position 10, 15, 20 years ago to do over 120 episodes of a successful show, that rerun is something that can sustain you through the years when I'm working on this little project or going to do theater or having kids and having to provide for my family. It would be something I could do," Lowe's said. 'That's not reality anymore. The whole model has changed."
The SAG-AFTRA strike follows a strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which went into effect last week after it failed to reach an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), a trade group representing more than 350 major studios and streaming giants, Page Six reports. Fran Drescher (herself a star of the TV show "The Nanny") released a statement saying that SAG-AFTRA had "no choice" but to go on strike: "What is happening to us is happening to all labor sectors. What is happening to us is happening in all labor sectors," he said. We have a problem and we are going through it right now." Without us, you would not exist.
