Prince William and Princess Kate couldn't get away with baby names like Ernest and August, royal writers say

While Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank chose names that honored their ancestors for their two children, there is no denying that Ernest and August are by no means "typical" royal names.

That is why some royal writers and commentators believe that Prince William and Princess Kate could not have given their children such names.

Pauline McLellan, professor of marketing and consumer studies at Royal Holloway University and author of "Royal Fever," told the Express: "The royal family has been a bit of a departure from the way it was in the past. [but] the departure may have been equally welcomed by the younger generation, who feel that the monarchy is an outdated institution."

McLellan added that royals who are unlikely to succeed to the throne or who are not working are "free to name their children according to their personal preferences." [Zara, Archie, Savannah, Sienna...

For experts, that is the status quo, and it will not change anytime soon.

"The choice of a child's name reflects its tradition and its permanence, and I think it is unlikely that George will change that by choosing a non-traditional name in the future," she says.

For those who may not know, Prince William (the first in line to the throne) and Princess Kate are the parents of Prince George (age 9), Princess Charlotte (age 8), and Prince Louis (age 5),

and they have a long history of naming their children.
