Is Princess Charlotte's coronation dress the same as her coronation?

While the Crown Princess of England's "Trooping the Colors" look had some important hidden meaning, we also liked Princess Charlotte's dress. But am I the only one who thought it looked a little familiar?

Not quite, says children's clothing designer Amaia Arrieta. The way the skirt moves is exactly the same, but she changed the sleeves and added a collar and belt. It was perfect for her, and since it was only a few weeks ago, it makes sense."

Charlotte wore the original version of the white dress, featuring embroidered sleeves and a matching cape, to King Charles' coronation on May 6. The dress was designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, who many will remember as the designer of Kate's wedding dress.

"I think it was very patriotic and suited her beautifully," says Arietta, who has been dressing Charlotte and her brothers Prince George and Prince Louis for nearly a decade, about the "Trooping the Color" upcycle. Prince Louis wore the designer's long navy socks just yesterday ("He looked great in the shorts and blazer, very elegant and classy," she says)

If this look is upcycled, it is definitely a mirror of mother Kate and and something Charlotte has been known to do. Kate has reworn and upcycled the look many times: for example, at the 2020 BAFTAs, Kate wore a gold embroidered Alexander McQueen cream dress that she wore in Malaysia in 2012. Kate upcycled another McQueen gown to attend a gala at the National Portrait Gallery in 2019, changing the dress' sleeves from off-the-shoulder to cap sleeves.

At yesterday's Trooping the Colors (the King's first ceremony as monarch), George, Charlotte, and Louis coordinated in navy, white, and red, the colors of the Union Jack. The three of them looked very close and very natural together," says Arrieta. They've been going to a lot of formal occasions lately. Louis was very young and seemed to be enjoying himself."

And of Charlotte in particular, "she is wonderful," says Arrieta. 'She has so much class, so much elegance.'
