Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, has been diagnosed with breast cancer, several media outlets have reported.

"Sarah, Duchess of York, was recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer after a routine mammography screening," a representative for the Duchess told People." She was advised that she would need to undergo surgery, which was successfully performed."

"She has been diagnosed with a breast cancer and is now in the process of undergoing surgery.

Ferguson married Prince Andreu in 1986 and has two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

"The Duchess is receiving the best medical care and doctors say her prognosis is good," a representative said, adding that she is currently recuperating with her family.

"The Duchess wishes to express her gratitude to all the medical staff who have supported her over the past few days. The Duchess is also very grateful to the staff involved in the mammogram that discovered her illness, and believes that her experience underscores the importance of regular checkups, as she has had no other symptoms."
