Shakira, accused of making xenophobic remarks about her ex-boyfriend Gerard Pique's fans, says she is "proud to be Latin American."

Indirect exchanges between Shakira and Gerard Pique continue to rage months after they announced their separation.

The former soccer player recently said in a Spanish-language interview, "I am very disappointed in society. My ex-girlfriend is Latin American. ..... . you don't know what her fans have said about me on social media. These people have no life" (translation by Us Weekly).

After the clip was shared on Twitter, criticism of Pique doubled in the comments section, with some pointing out his xenophobia. For the record, the former professional athlete is Spanish and Shakira is Colombian; they have two children together.

Shortly after Pique's words were spread, Shakira tweeted "Orgullosa de ser Latinoamericana" and added an emoji of a Latin American flag. Shakira tweeted "Orgullosa de ser Latinoamericana" along with an emoji of a Latin American flag.

Loyal fans of the superstar singer supported her message in the comments.

There are always two sides to every breakup, but Pique seems to be doing her best to make sure no one takes her side.

They broke up after Pique was suspected of cheating, and Shakira called that time "the darkest time of my life."

Shortly thereafter, in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El PaĆs, Pique said, "I will continue to do what I want to do. On the day I die I will look back and hope that I have always done what I wanted. I want to be true to myself. I'm not going to spend money to clean up my image."

He added: "I'm not going to spend money to clean up my image. My life is changing and I know how to stay happy."

As you can imagine, everyone was thrilled for him after hearing that.
