President Joe Biden "not expected" to attend King Charles' coronation

May 6 will mark the first coronation of a British monarch in 70 years, since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953, but U.S. President Joe Biden is not expected to attend this historic event.

According to a report in People, Biden will not attend King Charles' ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London due to scheduling conflicts, and will instead send a delegation. However, Biden's May schedule has not yet been finalized, the media outlet noted. If he chooses not to attend, Biden will likely send another high-profile delegation instead, such as his wife, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Despite this possibility, a source close to Biden told The Telegraph that the relationship between the president and Charles remains "strong." This source also said that "some effort may still be underway to see if Biden can be persuaded to come to the coronation." Another source said that Biden's plans are not "lock and load" but are still "technically possible."

About a month ago, a White House source told Time that Prince Charles' coronation "doesn't seem like the kind of event Joe Biden would attend," despite having attended Queen Elizabeth's funeral last September.According to the Mirror, Biden is expected to attend the May 6 event and may join Charles on his April 11 visit to Northern Ireland. [Bob Seely, a Conservative Party member of Congress and a member of the Select Committee on Foreign Relations, said, "This is a once-in-a-lifetime event. He said, "This is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and you would have thought he should come because he's the head of state. It just seems like a foolish decision."

Also, for historical context, at the previous coronation in 1953, Dwight Eisenhower was president, but he did not attend Queen Elizabeth's coronation himself, sending instead four dignitaries: instead, George C. Marshall, Omar N. Bradley, Earl Warren, and Fleur F. Cowles, and sent four dignitaries.

"While we hope Joe Biden will be invited, there is no historical precedent for a U.S. president to attend a royal coronation. The U.S. will be represented, and it will be interesting to see who the president chooses to attend."

Meanwhile, there is still no official word on the other U.S. delegation that is of interest: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The RSVP deadline for the coronation is reportedly tomorrow.
