Instead, one of the biggest controversies at the event seemed to revolve around Ashley Graham and Hugh Grant's red carpet interview.
During this interview, Graham attempted to ask Hugh Grant a few moderate questions, but Graham answered almost nothing. He also mentioned the novel Vanity Fair, but the model thought he was talking about the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, leading to one of the most awkward conversations in broadcast history.
But while one view of the situation is that Grant was brusque and unsympathetic, another is that he was just... The view is that he was British. He's British. Seriously, there is no agreement on the Internet as to which it was.
First, there is the opinion that it was "definitely disrespectful."
One Twitter user wrote: "Hugh Grant wants no part of this stupid s**t."
Meanwhile, editor Laura Bassett wrote:
"lol Hugh Grant is the most disgusting red carpet Interviewed - Ashley Graham: Who are you most looking forward to seeing tonight? Hugh: To "see." AG: To see victory. Hugh: No one in particular. Who are you wearing? Hugh: My suit."
As a Brit living in the US, I'd like to agree with Bassett a bit.
And there is a segment of the population that believes that Graham is not an experienced journalist and should not have been interviewed.
"So I don't think he was that disrespectful, but I do think she was ill-prepared. This is what happens when you pull people out of other professions and decide they would make great interviewers," wrote broadcaster Louise McSharry.
Writer Freya Drohan tweeted, "Ashley Graham and Hugh Grant's interview, while very awkward to watch, is proof that we need more journalists and reporters on the red carpet who can handle what is a much more difficult job than people think It is," they tweeted,
but the most popular opinion seems to be that there was a serious cultural misreading here.
One Twitter user wrote, "Interesting disagreement about Hugh Grant's behavior at the Oscars last night. Americans: he was rude, ungrateful, brusque, belligerent, grumpy, and unhelpful.
"Brits: lol."
Writer Patrick Renton commented, "The whole of America thinks this is Hugh Grant being rude, when in fact it is one of those rare situations where an older British man is in a good mood and no one understands his humor It's just one of those rare situations."
Also, writer Natasha Devon said, "As the reaction to the Hugh Grant and Ashley Graham interview shows (Americans think he's rude and the Brits know he's not faking). "
I genuinely still don't get it.
