Princess Kate, 2023 British Academy Awards Costumes: Everything You Need to Know
Aside from playfully slapping Prince William's butt at Sunday night's BAFTA awards ceremony (honestly, I was surprised), Princess Kate was as beautiful and glamorous as ever. Let's take a closer look at her outfit choices.
The Princess of Wales once again wore the white taffeta gown by Alexander McQueen that she wore to the 2019 BAFTAs. A stunning one-shoulder piece, the design was slightly altered for the occasion, with a long ribbon in place of the original floral appliqué design.
Kate accessorized with a pair of black opera gloves (which make Anastasia look like a scene from my favorite animated movie) and a pair of affordable gold-tone drop earrings from Zara (very relatable).
"I couldn't take my eyes off Kate's statement earrings. They are chandelier earrings from high-street brand ZARA," commented Maxwell Stone, fine jewelry expert at Stephen Stone (opens in new tab). [They feature a floral shape and rhinestone detailing and retail for just £17.99 (opens in new tab) [$28 in the US].
"Despite having access to an abundance of royal jewelry, Kate has been wearing some affordable pieces in recent months."
"If Kate thinks it is inappropriate to wear valuable jewelry during a cost-of-living crisis and focuses on affordable pieces If that is the case, it is not implausible."
[11In the UK, bills and everyday items are steadily rising in price, making life more difficult for many people across the country.
Stone is not the only one who has noticed that Kate has become more focused on re-wearing and choosing more affordable items.
"The Royal Family has a knack for understanding what the public wants," historian Mok O'Keefe, known as @gayaristo, once told Marie Claire.
"It means they remain present in the minds of the people. Subliminally, the message may be about the costs of the monarchy or environmental issues.
"But I think what Kate is doing is 'normalizing' the royal family. It used to be a matter of 'mystique'; now it's a matter of intimacy."
"We are all in this together. [We all have 'work clothes' that we wear over and over again. Kate is saying that when she does her job, she is just like us. In doing so, the Royal Family becomes less remote, more approachable, and, especially these days, more stable."
