Princess Catherine is Princess Diana in this weekend's look.

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the rugby match between England and Wales in Cardiff yesterday this past weekend. The Six Nations match was between the Rugby Football Union, of which Kate is a patron, and the Welsh Rugby Union, of which Prince William is a patron. (England, incidentally, won.)

When it came to fashion, however, Kate remained neutral, wearing Catherine Walker's white and red staggered coat in honor of both teams' national colors. In addition to paying homage to both rugby teams, she also paid homage to her mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Kate often pays tribute to the women who have earned the title of Princess of Wales before her. Kate's attire yesterday signified a bold return to the classic Diana of the 1990s: Diana first wore it for Princess Eugenie's christening in December 1990, followed by official visits to Canada in October 1991 and to the National Neurosurgical Hospital in London in March 1992, On many occasions, she again wore a white and red blazer with a contrasting black and white skirt. (Princess Diana wore a red hat with a black net designed by Philippe Somerville in the 1990 look, according to Tatler magazine.)

"Whereas Diana took sartorial risks with a staggered, wide-brimmed hat (with an ultra-feminine veil), a wide patent leather belt, and black pumps with red tips worthy of a Hollywood siren, Kate preferred to play it safe: over a black roll neck coat, leather gloves, heeled boots, and a simple white handbag," the outlet reported.

William and Kate seemed in good spirits and took time to talk to the players and their families before taking their seats in the stands. William himself expressed his support for Wales in fashion, adorning his suit with a striped red tie and red scarf, which he tucked into his blazer.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have long been sports fans, and in 2007 they attended a rugby match together. They have watched numerous games since then, and last year they took their eldest son, Prince George, to watch the Six Nations.

And as well as being an avid sports fan, Kate is also a staggered fan. She wore Emilia Wickstead's staggered pattern on a recent visit to the U.S., and also wore it to her engagement ceremony at Harvard University last December.
