Video of Princess Kate being bowled over is spreading on TikTok
While it is not necessary to bow or curtsy when meeting members of the British royal family, many people do bow to show respect.
For those wondering what bowing looks like, a royal fan account on TikTok was recently asked to edit a video of people bowing to Princess Kate, and they graciously complied.
The resulting video has gone viral, receiving many comments from royal fans and opponents alike.
"I would definitely bow when I see Kate," one wrote.
"She deserves it. We respect and love her," said another.
"She is iconic. ...... We love Kate," added a third.
Others were not so impressed with the video. 'It's outrageous ...... to bow down to royalty.' Someone said.
Others noted how odd this whole thing was. 'Imagine you're a normal person and a few years later everyone bows to you.'
If you find yourself in the presence of the British Royal Family and wonder what on earth to do, you can visit the official website (since Queen Elizabeth's sad passing, this particular page has has not been updated), here's what it says.
"While there is no mandatory code of conduct when meeting the Queen or any member of the Royal Family, many people wish to observe traditional formality.
"For men, a neck bow (from the head) is made; women make a small bow. Others prefer the normal handshake.
"When paying homage to the Queen, the correct honorific title is "Your Majesty" and "Ma'am" is pronounced with a short "a" as in "jam."
"The same rule applies to male members of the Royal Family, with the first title used being "Your Royal Highness" followed by "Sir."
"For other female members of the Royal Family, the first designation is customarily "Your Highness" followed by "Madam." becomes."
"The first title is 'Your Highness', then 'Sir'.
As Newsweek points out, there has been a renewed interest in bowing and curtsying among royals since Meghan Markle drew attention to this custom in "Harry & Meghan" (Netflix).
In the documentary, the Duchess of Sussex recalls the first time she prepared to meet the Queen.
"I remember in the car he [Harry] said, 'You know how to bow.' ...... ' I thought he was joking."
She also remembers that she was in the car when he told her that he was going to meet her.
She also performed a very exaggerated "joke" bow. This was apparently designed to show how little she knew about how to behave when she first met the royal family, but drew much criticism from those who considered it disrespectful.
