Princess Diana's autograph letter from her divorce sells for $170,000 at auction.
Earlier this month, Marie Claire reported that 32 personal letters written by Princess Diana upon her divorce from then-Prince Charles are being auctioned for charity. The letters to Susie and Tarek Cassim, currently being sold by Lay's Auctioneers, sold for $170,000, all of which will be donated to causes close to the late Princess Diana's heart.
Raise Auctioneers announced the sale of the collection two days ago. According to People, the letters were sold in individual lots in the sale called "Diana, Princess's Private Letters." The notes were written on Kensington Palace letterhead with Princess Diana's royal coat of arms and addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Cassim between 1994 and 1997; Lay's Auctioneers described the contents of the letters as "amazing" and "top secret" (well, it seems they were until now).
"Susie and Tarek Cassim, as very close friends of Princess Diana, have treasured these letters for over 25 years," the auction house said in a statement. 'These letters reflect their special and loving relationship with Princess Diana, the most unique woman they have ever known, and now, in 2023, ownership of these poignant documents is a responsibility the Cassims do not want to pass on to their children or grandchildren.' They have decided to sell the letters and use the proceeds from their sale to support a charity close to Susie and Diana's hearts"
.
The beneficiaries of the $170,000 were not named. The British auction house also added that the Cassims kept some of the "more personal and confidential letters" from Diana.
The collection offers a glimpse into how Diana felt about her divorce from Prince Charles. (The Prince and Princess separated in 1992 and finally finalized their divorce on August 28, 1996.)
The contents of Lot 418, which sold for $27,643, included Diana thanking Susie for the flowers. Diana also raised the suspicion that the Kensington Palace telephone may have been bugged.
"I do not have a cell phone, so it is difficult to discuss personal matters," Diana wrote. 'Since my conversations here are always recorded and passed on.'"
That letter, dated May 20, 1996, also included Diana's statement. If I had known a year ago that I was going through this divorce, I never would have agreed to it. It is hopeless and ugly."
Seven months later, in a letter dated December 17, 1996, Diana again thanked Susie for the flowers. Diana added wistfully, "I hope 1997 will be an easy year for all of us." As she wrote this sentence, she had no way of knowing that she had only a little more than eight months to live.
