Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not lose their royal titles, experts say
In December, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's documentary "Harry & Meghan" aired on Netflix, and earlier this month Harry's shocking memoir "Spare" was published: will the couple lose their title as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their candid remarks?
Royal family expert Jonathan Sacerdoti told Us Weekly that he doesn't think the royal family will go that far, despite the fact that a member of the British Parliament is pushing for them to do so.
"My feeling is that this is not what they want to do," Sacerdoti told the magazine of the royal family. 'I think they are trying to calm things down, not throw any more grenades.'
Three years ago, after Harry and Meghan stepped down as active members of the royal family, His late Majesty the King allowed the couple to retain their Sussex title, although they are no longer allowed to use the "royal highness" style, Us Weekly reported. However, in the aftermath of the spare and its explosive content, many have called on Prince Charles to fight fire with fire.
"It would probably be seen as aggressive behavior for the King to try to remove their titles, or at least for Harry and Meghan to feign it," Sacerdoti said, adding that such behavior would only cause more drama. 'Perhaps they are trying to avoid our misery. But that's not necessarily their agenda. They are trying to do their royal job and avoid it."
But not everyone feels that way: a member of the British Parliament, Robert William Henry Seely, is trying to pass a law allowing the Sussex family to downgrade its status, Sacerdoti said.
"He is pushing for an attempt to pass a bill that would allow Harry and Meghan to be downgraded as royalty," he says. 'He is planning so-called parliamentary legislation that would allow a vote to strip Harry and Meghan of their royal titles. This is intended to address what he calls 'bad royalty' in order to support the monarchy. This is in no way intended to embarrass the king or the royal family," he stated.
Harry himself referred to his and Meghan's titles in an interview with Anderson Cooper earlier this month. After Cooper asked why the two did not relinquish their titles themselves, the Duke of Sussex replied, "What difference does that make?"
And while Sacerdoti believes that stripping the couple of their titles is unlikely, another source told Us Weekly that doing so is still very much an option.
"The way to strike back would be to approve a measure to strip Harry and Meghan of their titles, which is a very real possibility. But equally, there is a strong belief that the best way to get back at or deny the Sussexes is to continue to ignore them and avoid being the center of their drama and constant attention."
