Kim Kardashian buys Princess Diana's amethyst cross for $200,000.
Here's a sentence I thought I'd never write: Kim Kardashian has purchased an amethyst cross that only the late Princess Diana ever wore.
At a Sotheby's auction in London on January 18, the reality star competed against three other bidders and paid a paltry $197,453 for the Attalla Cross
According to a press release from the auction house, this was "an auction was more than double the previous estimate." Meanwhile, a jewelry expert had previously told Page Six that the piece could sell for up to $500,000. [A Sotheby's press release stated, "The cross was purchased by Naim Attara CBE in the 1980s from Garrard (the jewelry store that produced Princess Diana's engagement ring), and through his friendship with Princess Diana, he loaned it to her several times over the years so she could wear it at events. The cross was purchased from a jewelry store that made engagement rings. The cross was worn by Princess Diana and was never seen in public after her death.
News of the Kardashian's new and frankly unexpected purchase was quite amusing to social media denizens. Especially since the founder of SKIMS had reportedly damaged an archival Marilyn Monroe dress she wore to last year's Met Gala. (Incidentally, these reports have turned out to be unfounded (open in new tab).)
One person tweeted, along with footage of Family Guy's Lois storming the store, "Kim Kardashian dead in celebrity memorabilia store." [This news spawned a whole new meme format of posting jokes about Kardashian getting an iconic (but somewhat niche) pop culture item, along with a picture of her at the Met Gala and a picture of the item. Sad to report, but very funny.
Christian Spofforth, head of jewelry at Sotheby's London, said, "This jewelry, by its size, color, and style, whether faith or fashion, or indeed both, cannot help but make a lively statement
Regarding the fact that the jewelry happens to be a cross, it seems important to note that the Kardashians are in fact a Christian family. 'We don't share it much, but we are really religious,' Kim Kardashian told Vogue in 2018. 'We start the day with a group chat with a Bible verse from my mom, and everyone weighs in on what it means. We are very Christian, and our work ethic and discipline comes from years of Catholic schooling."
