Jennifer Coolidge won a Golden Globe (and a Golden Globe)
Tonight at the Golden Globes, "White Lotus" actress and fan favorite Jennifer Coolidge was the presenter of the Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series/Musical Comedy category (won by Abbott Elementary's Tyler James Williams).
Normally, presenters' addresses are not very, well, noteworthy, but tonight Coolidge spoke for over a minute, sharing a long and winding story about how executive Kara Bishop called her to ask if she would present at the awards ceremony, The audience was mesmerized.
"I said, 'Oh my God, I'm so honored. Yeah, yeah, I'd love to,' and hung up the phone. ' Then I thought about it for a minute and had a full blown anxiety attack."
In a very relatable episode of overthinking, the actress slipped on the stage's waxed floor, couldn't keep up with the teleprompter, couldn't find the executive in charge of holding up cue cards in the audience, and, most memorably, misspelled the star's name, I could envision any number of scenarios that could have ruined the ceremony.
"Once you misspell someone's name, you're screwed," she insisted. As evidence, at one dinner party she mispronounced Bill Nighy's name as resembling Bill "Nye" and called Kaley Cuoco's name Kaley "Coco Coco."
The speech was colored by shots of the audience laughing at Coolidge's comic genius and timing, and when Coolidge said "And the Oscar goes to... ." and peaked when he ended his performance with a joke.
However! Coolidge's night was not over yet!
Coolidge won the Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for "White Lotus" and delivered her second iconic monologue upon receiving the award. She thanked the show's director, Mike White, saying, "You make people want to live longer, but I didn't."
"It was a fun night," Coolidge told the crowd as she finished her speech.
I officially nominate Jennifer Coolidge to present and receive all awards at all future ceremonies.
