Prince Harry and Meghan Markle "may have to fight back," says British royal editor
Will they or won't they?
Royal commentators are busy making metaphorical bets on whether the royal family, particularly Prince Charles and the Welsh royal family, will react to the allegations made in Netflix's Harry & Meghan.
For one royal editor, if the second Sussex documentary is as shocking as the trailer suggests, he may be forced to make a statement.
"The royal family may be content to remain calm, regardless of what has been said so far," Russell Myers wrote in the Mirror.
"But if this last installment plays out as we see it, they have no choice but to fight back, and may risk wreaking further havoc on an already hopelessly sad situation."
While royals usually prefer to keep their mouths shut about controversies, in a one-minute teaser for this coming Thursday's new episode, Harry talks about "organized gaslighting" and says, "They were willing to lie to protect their brother. They were never willing to tell the truth to protect us."
And that is just the beginning, so it would not be at all unusual if the royal family chose to respond to clarify certain allegations.
Meanwhile, royal family expert Katie Nichol previously told "Entertainment Tonight" that she had "spoken to a senior royal aide, who said they were reluctant to comment unless there was something damning, untrue, or defamatory to say." In the case of this documentary, they really don't want to get involved for the simple reason that they don't want to give more oxygen or publicity to a documentary that is already getting a lot of publicity"
.
"So if they can get through this without getting involved, that's probably the strategy. From what I've heard from the senior aides at the Palace, the idea is to try to stay calm and work through it and not get too distracted by this.
Before the trailer was released, a royal official told the Mirror (also written by Myers), "As far as everyone is concerned, it is business as usual and we have no desire to get involved in a war of words."
"Certainly, there is nothing worth getting involved in the first half, and there is nothing new about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex speaking publicly about their time in the Royal Family."
Palace officials deny Netflix's claim that they asked the royal family for comment in the first volume, which may not be a big deal, but neither is complete silence, so the story is not entirely true.
Nevertheless, the source added that "dignified silence is the order of the day as they are fully focused on getting on with the job."
But the incendiary teaser released on Monday may have changed all that.
As ever, all that remains is to wait.
