Season 2 of "Wednesday": Everything We Know

School may be over for students at Nevermore Academy, but fans of the Netflix hit "Wednesday" are already filled with anticipation for another semester in Jericho. Executive produced by Tim Burton and inspired by "The Addams Family," the spooky series follows 15-year-old Wednesday Addams as he investigates the complex mysteries at the heart of a school for outcasts, including a mysterious serial-killing monster and a centuries-long history of animosity between outcasts and normies. The film depicts the investigation.

The eight-episode season has topped the Netflix charts in dozens of countries, and the cast, including the Addams Family, will likely return for the next installment. The show's creative team is already making plans, including an answer to the finale's cliffhanger. Read on for everything we know about Season 2 of "Wednesday Night Live.

Netflix has yet to announce a renewal, but the show's record-breaking success makes that very likely; according to Deadline (opens in new tab), Season 1 currently holds the record for most watched hours in a week for a streaming English-language TV series with 341.23M hours watched. The record was previously held by "Stranger Things Season 4," making Wednesday's win particularly impressive. The show has also made the top 10 in all 93 countries tracked by Netflix, and as of November 29, it is #1 in 83 of those countries.

So the big question is not if there will be a Season 2, but when. Season 1 was filmed in Romania between September 2021 and March 2022 and streamed this November. Judging by this schedule (and given that Ortega has other projects in the works, including the next "Scream" film), new episodes will not be seen until fall 2024 at the latest.

"Wednesday" features many of the characters we already love (raise your hand if you want to fight for Enid). Most of them made it through Season 1 alive, so in Season 2 they will probably be Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair), Percy Hines White (Xavier Thorpe), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Jamie McShane (Sheriff Galpin) will return. We will also probably see more of the rest of the Addams Family, including Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams), Luis Guzman (Gomez Addams), Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley Addams), Fred Armisen (Uncle Fester)

This season.

As for this season's two big villains, either Tyler (Hunter Doohan) or Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci), or both, could return after being captured in the season finale. The former House mother is currently in custody and could make a cameo appearance from behind bars. Tyler is a member of the main love triangle and the last scene teases a possible jailbreak. Fortunately for fans, co-showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Miller will not make his return a protracted mystery.

"Yeah. That's right. He's there. That's what we wanted to tell you," Gough told Variety (opens in new tab).

Due in part to the issue of Principal Weems' fate, fans are shocked that Gwendoline Christie's character did not make it out of the season finale alive. Unfortunately, it seems that the glamorous educator is truly dead for now, and co-writer Miles Miller told Variety (opens in new tab) that Weems' death was an impactful way to end the first season.

"I think for us, the emotional impact of that death really landed on Wednesday. 'We wanted this world where your loved one dies. She was incredible."

The showrunners are pretty firm about Weems being dead now, but it is possible that the show will find a way to bring her back (after all, the finale did include a revival). If Christy is going to be on the show for another season, I am willing to suspend my disbelief. Besides, Jenna Ortega herself has said she can't believe that actor is gone forever.

"Lady, that was unbelievable," Ortega said in an interview with TV Guide (opens in new tab). 'I can't. I love Gwendoline Christie too much. I can't accept that as the truth."

Christie also offered her thoughts on her character's fate, telling TV Guide, "I feel like Larissa Weems will never be ruled by something as mundane as death."

"I was really devastated when I read that," she continued.

"But it cheered me up to know that Christina Ricci's lifelong desire to stab me in the neck would come true."

In the first eight episodes of "Wednesday," the heroine discovered that Marilyn Thornhill (aka Laurel Gates) and Tyler (who was secretly Hyde) were behind the deaths plaguing Jericho, and that an evil The mystery of the season was wrapped up when they discovered that there was a plot in the works. Both were defeated and Crackstone was sent back to Hades, but Principal Weems died before Wednesday and the Nevermore students could save the academy. The season ends with two unresolved threads: Tyler is still there, hinting that he will soon escape from captivity.

Gough and Miller already have big plans for the series, and Miller told Variety that they planned the series with three or four seasons in mind. 'For us, it's always looking to the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it's ideally looking at multiple seasons,' he told the outlet. 'It's never an expectation, it's an expectation that the show will be successful. So we always draw up at least three or four seasons worth of potential story lines for the characters."

He added that whatever the plan is, it's not set in stone, and hinted that viewer opinions about the characters could influence the plot." It could evolve and change. Often you want to see which characters and cast members pop and who they like to write for. But there is certainly a clear path of what we want to do in future seasons," he said.

In an interview with TV Line, Gough and Miller previewed a bit of a possible Wednesday adventure, explaining that season two could push Wednesday's comfort zone.

"The series is really about a girl who sees the world in black and white and learns that there are shades of gray," Miller told the outlet." I think like any relationship or any friendship, it can be complicated by other factors. It is never smooth sailing. And it's really her learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship."

There is also the big question of the stalker who apparently followed Wednesday throughout the season before revealing himself in the finale's final scene.

"We know who it is, we can't make fun of who it is," Miller told TV Guide (opens in new tab). But we certainly have big plans and many more stories to tell in terms of Wednesday and her friends"

.

Gough and Miller also shared some of their ideas for supporting roles on the show, and Miller told TV Line (opens in new tab) that he is interested in reviving the rest of the Addams Family and exploring Wednesday and Morticia's relationship.

"I felt like we just touched the surface of those characters and the actors are so great in those roles," he told the outlet.

"I think Catherine is the iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also integral to the show, and the idea of Wednesday trying to make her own way outside of her family is very important."

Ortega also shares her thoughts about the upcoming season, including her theory about who could be the stalker." I hope it's someone totally random," she told TV Guide. 'There's a really interesting character in the background of the Nevermore exterior shots. He's like a janitor (raking leaves). He was such a cool guy, so I hope it's him and I'd love to talk to him."

The actress also told Entertainment Tonight (opens in new tab) that she hopes the show will take Wednesday to a darker place.

"I want her to be darker," she said. She has a lot of lines about saving the school or doing something, but to me, her main drive against monsters is competitiveness. How does this guy do this? I want it to have more of an anti-hero flow to it than a typical hero."
