Emotional Moments from Behind the Scenes at the Earthshot Award Ceremony
Here in the United States, the second annual Earthshot Awards ceremony will be streamed on PBS.org and the PBS app on Monday, December 5, at 2 p.m. ET. It will also be available on the Earthshot Awards YouTube channel. (First, enjoy the stories of the winners and nominees, then the spectacular presenters and performers, the stage, and the Prince and Princess of Wales.)
Once you start watching, you will meet all the nominees and the five winners representing the five categories of Earthshots:
Also, Chloe x Halle (Prince William said of their performance, "The direction and lighting were amazing,) Annie Lennox, and Ellie Goulding (William and Catherine are longtime fans, and she was the singer at their 2011 wedding!) ), as well as live performances by Billy Eilish will also perform in pre-recorded footage, and celebrity presenters include Rami Malek, Catherine O'Hara, Shailene Woodley, and David Beckham (a big fan of the royal family.)
"I am honored to be invited by Prince William. 'I am an optimist. I am optimistic because human beings, working together, are capable of great creativity."
Also in attendance were Caroline Kennedy and her two children, Jack and Tatiana Schlossberg, John Kerry, and, of course, the event's hosts, the Prince and Princess of Wales. Princess Catherine presented the awards, and Prince William said, "The Earthshot Solution you have seen tonight is proof that we can overcome our planet's greatest challenges. The decisions we make now will affect generations to come.
However, there was one touching moment that you may not have seen, and it captured this writer's attention: in between set changes, a video of Ed Sheeran singing "Visiting Hours" at last year's Earthshot Awards ceremony in London was played. I couldn't help but listen to the lyrics and look squarely at the Prince of Wales, who had lost someone very dear to him, his beloved grandmother, the Queen, less than three months earlier:
I wish that Heaven had visiting hours
. So I could just show up and bring the news...
So much has changed since you gone.
I wish Heaven had visiting hours. [because you always do the right thing...
Because this is not goodbye, but until we meet again
So much has changed since you gone.
For most of the song, the Prince of Wales chatted with the others, looking pensive and pensive ahead for a while.
The Prince and Princess of Wales left privately on Saturday.
